(Chicago) Eric Hosmer signed a one-year, $720,000 contract with the Chicago Cubs, giving the club an additional option at first base and as a hitter of choice.
A person familiar with the matter confirmed the deal to The Associated Press anonymously, as the deal is contingent on passing a medical exam.
Since the start of the offseason, the Cubs have also signed shortstop Dansby Swanson, right-hander Jameson Taillon, outfielder Cody Bellinger, reliever Brad Boxberger and receiver Tucker Barnhart. They were all free agents.
Hosmer, Swanson, Bellinger and Barnhart have each won at least one Gold Glove.

Hosmer, 33, played with San Diego and Boston last season. In 104 games, he batted . 268 with eight home runs and 44 RBIs. The Red Sox waived him last month.
Drafted third overall in 2008 by Kansas City, Hosmer made his big league debut for the Royals in 2011. He was instrumental in their 2015 title win.
Hosmer has a . 277 batting average in 1,658 games with 196 home runs and 879 RBIs.
He was a 2016 All-American, hitting 25 long balls and 104 RBIs.
