(Port Saint Lucie) Carlos Beltran joined the New York Mets as a special assistant to general manager Billy Eppler. This will be his first stint with a major league team since he was fired as head coach of the New York team for his involvement in the Houston Astros’ sign-stealing scandal.

Beltran had been hired on day 1er November 2019 to replace Mickey Callaway as Mets manager. The latter, however, announced his resignation on January 16, without having managed to lead a single game with the team.

Beltran’s firing was announced just three days after he was the only Astros player to be formally named in the Major League investigation. He determined that the Texas team had broken the rules by using electronic devices to steal signals, en route to winning the World Series in 2017.

Beltran spent the last campaign as an analyst for the New York Yankees YES network.

Beltran, 45, played for the Mets from 2005 to 2011 and is sixth in team history in home runs (149) and RBIs (559).

Beltran was named the American League’s Most Outstanding Rookie with the Kansas City Royals in 1999. He has also played for the San Francisco Giants, St. Louis, and the United States. Louis Cardinals and Yankees.
