(Dunedin) Rainer Nunez hit a two-run single as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tampa Bay Rays 7-6 on Friday in the Grapefruit League, but it was the injury of Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
Guerrero left the game in the second set with a right knee problem. Manager John Schneider said after the game that he was confident the injury was minor.
The power hitter hit a single run in the first inning, advancing to second base on the throw to home plate to stop Bo Bichette from scoring. Guerrero looked uncomfortable as he tried to reach the block, but he played the rest of the inning.
Guerrero, who is expected to join the Dominican Republic team on Sunday for the World Baseball Classic, will be assessed daily for his injury.
Rob Brantley and George Springer hit doubles in the second to give the Blue Jays a 3-1 lead. Matt Chapman made it 4–2 in the third with a single.
The Rays took a 5–4 lead in the sixth through Niko Hulsizer, who crossed home on a poor tackle by Stevie Berman.
