Thanks to Trea Turner, the United States advances to the semifinals

(Miami) Trea Turner gave the team an eighth-inning Grand Slam lead when the USA defeated Venezuela 9-7 Saturday night to secure a berth in the World Baseball Classic semifinals.

On Sunday night, the United States, defending champions, will face Cuba for a place in the grand final.

Venezuelan José Altuve, second baseman, one of the stars of the Houston Astros, left the game in the fifth inning after being hit in the right hand by a pitch by Daniel Bard.

Astros officials said they will provide an update on Sunday.

Trailing 7-5, the United States loaded the bases in the eighth inning with a walk, a single, and a hit off losing pitcher José Quijada.

Silvino Bracho took over and Turner, ninth in the United States’ all-hitter role, dispatched an inning change 407 feet from home plate, deep to left field, with a no-ball tally and two hits.

It was the third Grand Slam in Team USA history.

David Bednar, the fifth pitcher to hit the mound for the United States, was credited with the victory. Ryan Pressly scored the last three outs of the game and made the save.

In the loss, Luis Arraez hit two home runs.

New York Yankees Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson and Tommy Kahnle reinstated

(LA) The New York Yankees reinserted Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson and Tommy Kahnle into their roster Thursday ahead of their three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers this weekend.

To make room for them on their roster, the Yankees traded all-rounders Oswaldo Cabrera and Franchy Cordero and left-handed pitcher Matt Krook at the AAA level.

Stanton, Donaldson and Kahnle appeared in a Yankees Farm Club game at the AA level on Tuesday. Stanton went 0-for-3 in his first game since sustaining a left hamstring injury on April 15.

Donaldson, who was in his fourth fitness game, was 1-for-4. He suffered a right thigh injury on April 5.

Kahnle worked a single inning and allowed one run, one hit and two walks. He’s been sidelined since camp with tendinitis in his right biceps.

Yankees coach Aaron Boone said Wednesday that he was comfortable with Stanton returning after just one game of rehab. He added that Stanton might be signed as a pinch hitter for a while.

The Yankees are still without center fielder Harrison Bader, who injured his right thigh on Monday. Left-handed goalscorer Carlos Rodon is also sidelined with a left forearm and back problems. His name was transferred to the 60-day injured list.

The Blue Jays have an advantage over the Brewers

(Toronto) Whit Merrifield scored two run doubles as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 7-2 on Tuesday.

Merrifield capped a four-run first innings for his team with his 11It is double, scoring Matt Chapman and Brandon Belt.

The visitors’ William Contreras hit a two-run homer in the first before the Toronto club pressed on.

The comeback started with singles from Vladimir Guerrero and Chapman. In the second round at bat for the Blue Jays, Bo Bichette drove in a run using an optional, then Belt added a run-off single.

In the third, it was Cavan Biggio’s turn to push a runner to base with a single.

Guerrero and Alejandro Kirk each provided three singles among the Blue Jays’ top 14 hits. Yusei Kikuchi (6-2) allowed two runs and three hits in five innings.

He walked five times but got back to winning ways, having been beaten in his last two matches.

The 31-year-old Japanese won his 500It is career elimination in the fourth, at the expense of Joey Wiemer.

Nate Pearson had three outs in the seventh inning. Adrian Houser (1-1) allowed seven runs and 11 hits in four and a third inning.

The outdoor game took place in front of 32,930 people at the Rogers Centre.

Andruw Monasterio hit his first major league hit on his 26th birthday. He hit a single on the mound in the fourth inning.

Recalled Tuesday from Nashville (AAA), Longueuil resident Abraham Toro was hit while hitting as a pinch hitter in the ninth.

The Brewers have lost four of their last five games.

On Wednesday night, starting pitchers will be Julio Teheran and Alek Manoah. The latter will seek their first victory since April 5; his record is 1-5.

Toronto Blue Jays Anthony Bass apologizes for sharing homophobic post

(Toronto) Toronto Blue Jays reliever Anthony Bass has apologized for sharing a homophobic post on social media.

Bass spoke briefly with media representatives hours before the Blue Jays-Milwaukee Brewers game on Tuesday. He read a statement and the journalists present were not allowed to ask questions.

Bass, 35, shared an Instagram post from another creator on Monday using “biblical reasons” to call for a boycott of Bud Light and Target, which have publicly supported the LGBTQ+ community.

Bass said he has apologized to his teammates and intends to use the resources offered by the Blue Jays to better educate himself.

He added that “the baseball field is for everyone” and that the Blue Jays want to welcome everyone.
