The Phillies, the defending national champions, are 0-4 to start the season for the first time since 2016. The only team to win a World Series after starting the season with four losses is the Atlanta Braves in 2021.
Nestor Cortes (1-0) gave up one run and seven hits in five innings and had some key defensive plays early in the season.
Cortes has allowed a run or less 16 times since the start of last season.
With the Yankees up 3-1 in the fifth inning, JT Realmuto connected with a straight right and Franchy Cordero’s throw to home plate ended up over catcher Jose Trevino. Cortes threw the throw, caught Cordero’s pitch, and relayed it to DJ LeMahieu at third base, who tapped Brandon Marsh in the back for the out.
Cordero made his first start for the Yankees and hit a two-run double in a five-run fifth inning. Trevino added a single, good for an inning run.
Taijuan Walker (0-1) allowed four runs and four hits in four and a third inning.
