(Washington) Washington Nationals manager Dave Martinez has agreed to a two-year contract extension with the team he led to the 2019 World Series championship, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity, as the news had not yet been publicly announced.
Going into Tuesday’s games, the Nationals were 57-68 and were last in the Nationals’ East Division.
According to The Athletic, which was first to report on Martinez’s new contract, general manager Mike Rizzo is also expected to sign a contract extension.
The manager’s and general manager’s contracts expired at the end of the 2023 season.
The team record under Martinez is 378-455. He took charge of Nacional in 2018, his first managerial role.
The following season, the team started by winning just 19 of their first 50 games. Led by the likes of Stephen Strasburg, Max Scherzer, Juan Soto, Anthony Rendon and Trea Turner, the Nationals fought back and qualified for the playoffs via fourth ace. They ended up defeating the Houston Astros in seven games to win their first World Series title.
Things haven’t gone so smoothly since then, as the team has finished last in its section every season, despite Rizzo’s efforts to rebuild the roster.
