(Washington) Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg has decided to retire, the Associated Press has learned.
This source requested anonymity as Strasbourg has not yet made its decision public. Strasbourg were due to hold a press conference ahead of a game at Nationals Park in September.
O washington post first reported the news.
Strasbourg was the 1st overall pick in the 2009 draft and 2019 World Series MVP. But his career has been marred by injuries.
The scorer, who turned 35 last month, has had surgery for thoracobrachial cross syndrome since winning the World Series, a procedure that required the removal of a rib and two muscles in his neck.
The right-hander has not pitched since June 9, 2022. His only start this season lasted just four innings and two-thirds and his name was later placed on the disabled list again. He has thrown just 528 pitches in the Majors since signing a seven-year, $245 million deal in December 2019.
Strasbourg underwent ligament reconstruction in 2012, ending a stellar 15-6, 3.16 season. Without the ace, the Nationals lost in the series of sections to the St. Louis Cardinals.
