Alyssa Nakken, first woman to train on court
(San Francisco) Alyssa Nakken shattered a glass ceiling in Major League Baseball on Tuesday by becoming the first woman to field players in a regular season game when she took over the San Francisco Giants.
The 31-year-old went on to lead the Giants’ first base in the third inning after Antoan Richardson was sent off in a game against the San Diego Padres.
When she was announced as the replacement, Nakken received a round of applause from the crowd – as well as a handshake from Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer.
Nakken previously held that role during spring camp and at a July 2020 Grapefruit Leagues meeting against the Oakland Athletics. She had also regained her position during the next day’s game.
“You feel a certain pride to be here,” Nakken said at the time. For me it’s the best place to watch a game for sure. »
The former star of the University of Sacramento softball team became the first woman to get a job coaching Major League Baseball when she joined manager Gabe Kapler in January 2020.
