(Toronto) The Toronto Blue Jays offense calmed down at an inopportune time.
The Texas Rangers were happy to take advantage.
Robbie Grossman hit a home run and the Rangers defeated the Blue Jays 6-3 on Tuesday night.
“These guys are looking forward to this series, looking forward to this challenge,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. It’s a good team. We just haven’t had consecutive hits together until now. »
The Blue Jays’ top three hitters — George Springer, Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. — totaled just one hit in 12 games.
The Rangers (80-64) extended their winning streak to four and surpassed the Blue Jays (80-65) in the rankings of American drafted teams.
The Texas team came in second and made a point of holding a tiebreaker against the Torontonians if both teams finished the campaign with the same record.
The Rangers, however, lost the services of pitcher Max Scherzer, who went scoreless for five innings before leaving the game with a muscle spasm in his arm.
The Blue Jays also lost their lead ahead of the Seattle Mariners in the draft rankings. The Mariners joined the Blue Jays after defeating the Los Angeles Angels 8-0 on Tuesday.
The Blue Jays managed just three hits from Scherzer before the veteran right-hander left the mound after 73It is start the night. He will undergo an MRI scan on Wednesday.
“When I threw that first curveball to Bichette (in the sixth inning), I felt kind of like a breakdown,” Scherzer described. I felt like I wouldn’t be able to make another bid. The best case scenario is that I wake up tomorrow morning and feel great. »
Scherzer was replaced by Jose Leclerc, who was removed from the game in the seventh inning after allowing a double to Spencer Horwitz and a sacrifice bunt to Davis Schneider.
Cavan Biggio welcomed left-hander Brock Burke with a single goal that put the home team on the scoreboard.
Santiago Espinal followed with a hit to left-center field, but was thrown out while trying to turn his single into a double. The Blue Jays challenged the decision and Espinal was ultimately declared safe.
Ernie Clement hit a weak grounder that pushed Biggio to the plate and Espinal to third base. Alejandro Kirk, Toronto’s third straight hitter, struck out to end the inning.
Schneider hit a solo home run in the ninth inning off Aroldis Chapman. It was his eighth long ball of the season.
Blue Jays starter Hyun Jin Ryu (3-3) allowed three earned runs, five hits and one walk in six innings of work.
Scherzer (13-6) still recorded the Rangers’ victory.
“I thought we had our shots to hit and we didn’t,” Schneider said.
The Blue Jays began their 10-game homestand by winning a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals. After this four-game series against the Rangers, the Blue Jays will host the Boston Red Sox over the weekend.
Corey Seager’s fourth-inning single allowed him to reach the 1,000 career hit mark in the Majors. He scored on Grossman’s ninth home run of the campaign.
Seager touched home plate again, in the sixth inning, after hitting a double. He was pushed to the plate by Jonah Heim’s sacrifice. The Rangers added two runs in the seventh.
Blue Jays reliever Erik Swanson was scoreless in the eighth inning in his first appearance since coming off the injured list earlier in the day.
The Rangers got an insurance run in the ninth inning off reliever Trevor Richards.
