(Pittsburgh) The Washington Nationals offered Mike Rizzo the opportunity to finish what he started as president of baseball operations and general manager of the organization.

The DC team agreed on Wednesday to a multi-season contract extension for Rizzo. The deal comes as Rizzo — the architect behind the 2019 World Series — oversees a complete team rebuild that he believes is nearing completion.

Details of the pact were not revealed, but the 62-year-old said he plans to stay in Washington “for a long, long time.”

The Nationals won the only championship in franchise history four years ago and immediately began a major rebuild. They notably traded Max Scherzer, Trea Turner, and Juan Soto in order to expand their bench of prospects for the following seasons.

The Nationals are on pace to finish in last place in the National League East for the fifth consecutive season, but have already surpassed their 2022 season win total (55) with two weeks remaining in the regular schedule. The Nationals enter Wednesday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at 65-80.

This contract extension comes after the team signed head coach Davey Martinez to a contract that expires after the 2025 season.
