(New York) Buck Showalter said Sunday that he will not return for a third season as manager of the New York Mets.
At 67 years old, Showalter made the announcement before the duel against the Philadelphia Phillies. The Mets began the day with a 74-86 record and 29 1/2 games behind the National Division East champion Atlanta Braves.
Showalter became manager of the Mets ahead of the 2022 season and led the New York team to a 101-61 record last campaign. He received the title of coach of the year at Nacional.
The Mets are expected to hire David Stearns as president of baseball operations, a senior position above general manager Billy Eppler in the pecking order, and Showalter’s departure clears the way for Stearns to pick his manager.
