Blue Jays get away with victory
(Houston) Matt Chapman took Vladimir Guerrero Jr. home with a double two-out in the ninth inning as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Houston Astros 4-3 on Friday night.
Chapman broke the tie after a slap in the center left field of the reliever Héctor Neris (1-1). Guerrero started from the first pillow to cross the plate.
“I wasn’t really trying to do much. I just wanted to continue the inning and put Vladdy in the scoring position, Chapman explained. I wanted the next player to reach home plate. Luckily, I managed to find the driveway and Vladdy shifted into second gear. »
The Blue Jays managed a third straight win while the Astros suffered a third straight loss.
Singles from Yuli Gurriel and Aledmys Díaz against Jordan Romano allowed the Houston team to put the runners on the wings after a late ninth outing.
Jason Castro was eliminated, setting the table for JJ Matijevic, who was making his Major League debut. Romano, however, passed Matijevic in the glove for an eighth defense this season.
“Players on first and third base, but he didn’t panic,” Blue Jays coach Charlie Montoyo said of Romano. He was playing the ball at 97 or 98 miles an hour today. I have to keep talking about him because it’s not easy what he does. The pitchers and the defense won us the game. »
Tim Mayza (1-0) didn’t give up racing in the eighth inning and took the win.
Justin Verlander was making his first start against the Blue Jays since running out of a run or hit against them in Toronto on Day 1er September 2019. The big righty excluded the Blue Jays on Friday night until Raimel Tapia hit a single in the fourth inning.
Verlander allowed three runs, four hits and a walk in six working innings.
“I didn’t have the things I wanted to have,” observed Verlander. You can’t have your best stuff in every match. »
The Astros opened up a 3-0 lead in the third inning with four hits and a walk. Martin Maldonado doubled up and Jeremy Peña followed with a walk. Michael Brantley, Alex Bregman and Gurriel were then seconded.
“At the beginning of the game, we didn’t have many good plate presences. In the second round at bat, the assists were better,” said Astros manager Dusty Baker.
Toronto tied the game 3-3 in the fifth inning with back-to-back homers from Santiago Espinal and Bradley Zimmer. Both solo slaps came in consecutive throws.
Blue Jays starter Ross Stripling allowed three runs and five hits in four innings on the mound.
