(Miami) The Miami Marlins hired Peter Bendix as president of their baseball operations, a role that convinced him to leave the Tampa Bay Rays after 15 seasons.
Bendix most recently served as the Rays’ senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager. He and the Marlins reached an agreement over the weekend, and the South Florida team confirmed the information on Monday morning.
“Peter has an excellent reputation in baseball and is committed to sustainably cultivating excellence in all areas of baseball operations,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said in comments released by the club. I look forward to working with Peter to return the Marlins to the playoffs. »
The Marlins confirmed Bendix’s hiring on the eve of the annual Major League Baseball general managers conference in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Bendix will succeed Kim Ng, who was the Marlins’ general manager for three seasons. Ng decided to resign last month after she and Marlins owner Bruce Sherman differed over what the team’s baseball operations should look like. The Marlins wanted to take advantage of the option year in Ng’s contract for 2024, but she declined.
Bendix spent 15 seasons with the Rays, first as an intern, then as senior vice president of baseball operations and general manager as of December 2021. In between, he also held positions such as assistant baseball operations, research coordinator and baseball development and director of baseball development. .
