(New York) The New York Mets hired Carlos Mendoza, who was a bench instructor for the New York Yankees, as manager.
A source familiar with the matter told the AP anonymously why the Mets have not made a formal announcement.
Mendoza spent the last four seasons backing up Aaron Boone with the Yankees.
He replaces Buck Showalter, fired by the Mets on Opening Dayer October.
Mendoza becomes the first major hire for new Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns.
Winning 101 games in 2022, the club has signed just 75 wins in 2023 despite the largest payroll in major baseball history.
Mendoza will turn 44 this month. He served as a coach in the Venezuelan Winter League, but never advanced beyond the A level in the minor leagues.
The Mets are on their fourth manager since 2017, when Terry Collins was replaced after seven years at the helm.
We can even talk about a fifth manager: Carlos Beltran was named to the position, but was fired before a single game, following an investigation into the Astros’ conduct during the 2017 World Series.
The Mets’ payroll was $355 million on the first day of the campaign.
The club played well until 1er June, before a slide that was followed by other bad streaks. Ultimately, Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer and other veterans were traded as the trade deadline approached in 1er August.
