(Chicago) Surprisingly, manager Craig Counsell left the Milwaukee Brewers to accept the same position with the Chicago Cubs.
The pact would net Counsell $40 million over five years.
David Ross was the Cubs manager.
“On behalf of the organization, we express our gratitude to David and what he brought to the team, on and off the field,” said Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer.

The club fought for a playoff spot this year before losing five of six times from September 26th.
The Cubs finished just one game outside of the Nationals’ additional playoff spots with an 83-79 record.
Counsell, 53, grew up in a suburb of Milwaukee.
He went 707-625 with the Brewers, setting club records for wins and games played as a manager.
Milwaukee won the section title this year before a victory over Arizona in the first round of the playoffs.
A former Wisconsin infielder, Counsell took over in 2015, replacing Ron Roenicke.
His contract ended with the end of the 2023 season.
Counsell has two sons playing baseball in the NCAA Big Ten: Brady at the University of Minnesota and Jack at the University of Michigan.
His father, John Counsell, once managed the community side of the Brewers.
