(San Diego) San Diego Padres owner Peter Seidler, who spent hundreds of millions of dollars hoping to see his team finally win a World Series title, died Tuesday at age 63.

The cause of death was not specified. Seidler, a descendant of the O’Malley family that once owned the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers, is a two-time cancer survivor. The team reported in September that Seidler underwent surgery in August and would only return to the stadium at the end of the year.

Seidler was part of the group that purchased the Padres in 2012 and purchased majority owner Ron Fowler’s stake in November 2020. Seidler also purchased the Rawlings Major League Partnership in 2018.

After reaching the National League Championship Series the previous fall, Seidler agreed to the Padres investing approximately $258 million in payroll, making them third in the major leagues.

Seidler never wanted to answer media questions about the lucrative contracts given to players like Manny Machado and had never experienced one before.

“Will our parade be on land, water or both? I don’t know,” he said.
