(Philadelphia) The Philadelphia Phillies have signed manager Rob Thomson to a one-year contract extension after he led the team to back-to-back games in the National League Championship Series.

Thomson, who is 60, is 155-118 since replacing Joe Girardi as Phillies manager on June 3, 2022. Thomson led the Phillies to the World Series in 2022, where they lost in six games to the Houston Astros. The Phillies returned to the NL Championship Series this season, but blew 2-0 and 3-2 leads in Games 6 and 7 at home against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Thomson helped the Phillies go 90-72 in 2023, confirming their first season of at least 90 wins since 2011. Last October, he also became the third manager in major league history to win 18 of his first 25 games in the playoffs, joining Joe McCarthy and Casey Stengel in this exclusive group.

He joined the Phillies in 2018 and was initially hired as a bench instructor under former manager Gabe Kapler.

Thomson previously said he plans to retire after the 2022 season before being named head coach. He mentioned after last season that he has no plans to leave his position and would instead prefer to coach the Phillies until they thank him for his service.
