(Atlanta) After being acquired last week from the San Diego Padres, first baseman Matt Carpenter was released by the Atlanta Braves.
It’s a move that costs the Braves $4 million, who signed Carpenter along with left-hander Ray Keer on Friday in exchange for outfielder Drew Campbell. In this transaction, the Padres retained $1.5 million of Carpenter’s $5.5 million 2024 salary.
The three-time St. Louis Cardinals All-Star revived his career with the New York Yankees in 2022, posting a .305 average, 15 home runs and 37 RBIs. The 38-year-old baseball player played in New York from May 26 to August 8, when he fractured his left foot on a foul ball. He returned to the game for the playoffs.
He later signed a two-year, $12 million contract with the Padres that included a $5.5 million player option for 2024. He hit just .176 with five home runs and 31 runs scored, but only struck out 50 times starting at 1.er July and his season ended on September 10 due to right elbow inflammation.
For his career, Carpenter has hit .260/.367/.451 with 175 home runs and 644 RBIs in 13 seasons.
