(New York) The NBA championship trophy has been given a facelift, and the league has also renamed the trophies that go to the East and West champions.
The NBA on Thursday unveiled a slightly redesigned Larry O’Brien Trophy where the ball and net are moved forward.
The net is also much more visible and the base is now round – two discs one on top of the other, the first with the names of the ex-champions clubs, the second for those who will triumph from this year.
We’ve also modified the Bill Russell trophy (for the most valuable player in the finals), now completely gold-plated, as the O’Brien trophy.
Four basketball legends now have their names associated with these honors.
The Eastern Champions Trophy was nominated for Bob Cousy, the Western Champions Trophy for Oscar Robertson.
“I’ve been part of the NBA family since 1950. One of my great joys in retirement has been watching basketball evolve,” Cousy said. There are few achievements greater than representing your side of the league in the finals. I am thrilled that the NBA has bestowed on me the honor of being associated with the eastern champions for years to come. »
And for the first time, there will be a more valuable player in the semifinals of the championship.
In the East we will present the Larry Bird Trophy, and in the West the Magic Johnson Trophy.

“The Conference Finals are the last hurdle before the big stage, the NBA Finals,” Johnson said. I am truly honored to have my name inscribed on the Western Finals Most Valuable Player trophy. »
