(Minneapolis) The Minnesota Twins have had to put young starter Joe Ryan’s name on the COVID-19 roster, which will deprive the rookie of at least one game.

Ryan was scheduled to climb the mound for Thursday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said Ryan was fine.

The 25-year-old right-hander, who made five starts last season after being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays, is 5-2 with a stellar 2.28 ERA in eight games in 2022. He allowed just 14 walks for 42 strikeouts in 43 1 /3 turns. The opponent only hits 0.186 against him.

He leads Major League rookies in wins and innings pitched and is second in strikeouts.

To replace him in the rotation, the twins called up southpaw Davin Smeltzer from their AAA St. Paul. Smeltzer made two starts for the Twins, winning one, and is posting an ERA of 1.74 in 10 1/3 innings.
