(Welland) Jaida Lee made history at the Canada Games on Monday by becoming the first female athlete to compete in the competition’s men’s baseball tournament.
Lee pitched an inning and a third to Newfoundland and Labrador in a 17–7 loss to Alberta in the first of several games of the day.
The 16-year-old from the capital of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Lee did not suffer a run in the fourth inning. Alberta fought back in the fifth, however, with a six-point burst that put the game out of reach.
Lee had been the flag bearer for Newfoundland and Labrador at the opening ceremonies of the Games.

The ball she threw will be on display at the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in St. Mary’s, Ontario.
In other competitions on Monday, Quebec won four medals, including two golds. Mathis Beaulieu won the sprint triathlon in 57 minutes and 43 seconds, all in difficult weather conditions.
The 18-year-old from Quebec City, Beaulieu is on a roll, winning his fourth straight gold medal.
In the men’s cross-country mountain bike race, brothers Maxime and Charles-Antoine Saint-Onge took the first two places.
Maxime, who is 16 years old, stopped the clock at one hour, four minutes and 15 seconds, two seconds ahead of his brother, five years his senior.
In the women’s section of this competition, Marie-Fay St-Onge took third place with 1:23:59, Marie-Fay is the sister of Maxime and Charles-Antoine.
With one gold, eight silvers and four bronzes, British Columbia ranks first with 13 medals.
Ontario follows with 12 medals, including nine golds. Quebec and Alberta are tied for third with eight medals.
