Revenge has taken place. Ukraine beat Italy in EuroBasket

Two weeks ago, our team faced the Italians in the World Cup qualifiers. Then, in a nominal home game held in Riga, the Ukrainians looked no worse than their opponents, but inexplicably managed to lose 89:97 and won by +11 during the match.

The current (more precisely, already yesterday) match also did not promise any sensations. On the contrary, the bookies thought so, confidently predicting the victory of the Italian team. Obviously, this was facilitated by the and subsequent defeat in Riga, where the Ukrainians lost to the Icelanders on the way. Also, the home stands factor should play an important role.

The first quarter confirmed these forecasts. Both teams scored points, but the hosts managed to do it better and every successful action was accompanied by the frenzied emotions of the fans. The Italians made a special bet on three-pointers that flew fairly regularly. What can not be said about free throws – such a terrible execution has not been seen for a long time. Part of our passivity resulted in the first quarter ending with a score of 11:16.

In the second match, Ainars Bagatskis took a timeout and tried to reach his players. “Respect your job” is perhaps the most censored statement from a coach I’ve ever heard. And apparently, he succeeded. The match was balanced and our three-pointers started coming in. Once again, Mikhailuk led his team forward that the Italians could not stop. An even game resulted in the score being 57:57 before the final quarter.

And in the last ten minutes, ours turned on the turbo mode. No one knew what to do with Sanon’s passages – Issuf regularly fell under someone else’s shield and earned points. Tkachenko regularly counterattacked and replaced spectacular dunks with three-pointers. Bliznyuk did not allow anything to be done in his basket, moreover, he had time to help the attack. Mikhailyuk continued to fascinate.

What about the Italians? As it turned out, their only hope was to shoot group shots from long range. To put it mildly, the European Championship tactic is like this. The hosts did not show anything special, and the Ukrainians lost the first minutes, perhaps, to themselves. With a score of 84:73 with 0.9 seconds left in the game, Bagatskis still found time to make fun of his opponent psychologically.

In principle, it was already clear that the Blue-Yellows would leave the group after two initial victories, but the third allowed it to be made official. Now, we will most likely play against teams from Poland or Israel representing group D in the 1/8 finals.

The Ukrainians will play their next match on September 6 against the Greek national team.

OFFICIALLY. Ukraine national team player will play for the Adriatic League club

Croatian “Zadar” reported on its official website the transfer of a basketball player from the Ukrainian national team Ivan Tkachenko.

After a short trial period during which the Ukrainian player met the requirements of the coaching staff, a contract was signed with him at the end of the season.

The club has already announced that Tkachenko will participate in the Adriatic League and the Croatian Championship, so the Ukrainian can make his debut for the new team in the local championship match against Kvarner on December 27.

Tkachenko did not sign a contract with any club at the beginning of the 2025/26 season and played in only two official matches after the start of the season – as part of the Ukrainian national team, against Georgia and Denmark in November as part of the 2027 World Cup qualifiers.

Last season Ivan played for Mitteldeutscher, where he won the German Cup. The forward, who played in 32 matches in the 2024/25 Bundesliga, averaged 4.9 points and 3.8 rebounds in 17.3 minutes.

During his club career, Tkachenko played for Ukrainians Cherkasy Mavpy and Prometheus, as well as Finland’s Helsinki Seagals.

Zadar is in sixth place in the Adriatic League Group B with 4 wins in 10 matches, and is in second place in the Croatian Championship with a score of 10-1.

“Start with me.” Doncic talked about what needs to change in the Lakers

Star player of Los Angeles Lakers Luka Doncic Against the background of the embarrassing defeat of Houston Rockets (96:119), he explained what the team had to change to improve the results:

“I don’t know exactly what needs to change, but something definitely needs to change. We need to figure it out, that’s what we need to do. Everyone should discuss it.”

I know JJ Redick said it would be disturbing. And that’s the way it should be.

As I said, we need to discuss this. It may be uncomfortable, but everyone needs to try harder, starting with me.

We just have to challenge each other. Everyone should challenge themselves and their teammates. “There’s no way to play the way we play, so we’ve got to be better than that.”
