Croatia – Ukraine 90-85: Won but missed second place

Thanks to a small offensive in the last five minutes, Croatia managed to beat Ukraine (90-85). Nonetheless, Einars Bagatskis’ side are the ones likely to take second place (with ‘Croatia’ third) if Italy do what they are supposed to against Britain.

Croatia finished the group stage with a win (90-85) over Ukraine, but not second place. Damir Mulaomerovic’s side only did half the work as they needed a 7+ point win to finish just behind Greece. However, he didn’t as Ukraine finished Group C in second place and Croatia in third place. The only case where the two positions need to be reversed is that a miracle happens and Great Britain (by far the worst team in the group) defeats Italy in a matter of hours at the Mediolanum Forum.

Most importantly for both sides, they avoided fourth place in the group and a first knockout round clash with Serbia. What has not escaped Italy.

The game was balanced from the start, Croatia took a slight lead but Ukraine didn’t give them the space to feel comfortable. Mainly because Volodymyr Erun did a great job in the executive part. But as soon as Damir Mulaomerovic’s players had found a rhythm from 6:75, things changed quickly. “X” (21-21) in the first third became +12 (41-29) in the 17th minute of the game, an example of the momentum that “Crvatska” had built up at that point. That momentum didn’t last long though, as within three minutes Ukraine managed to equalize the situation and concede the difference in shot (45-42), showing they have a pulse going into the second half.

This feeling was confirmed in practice in the third period. Volodymyr Herun and Sviatoslav Mihailiuk made such a step forward for Einars Bagatskis’ team that they caused a complete reversal of the landscape. First, the difference fell to -5 (61-56 at 27′) before the reversal was completed and to +4 (69-73) at 32′ of play.

However, in the final stages of the game, Croatia showed that they want it the most. Their offensive worked much better, Bojan Bogdanovic finished the balls he received and together with Kruslav Simon made the difference for the new surprise and victory in the curtain of the EuroBasket 2022 group stage.

Crazy money. Cost of permanent NBA Europe franchises revealed

Unicaja President Antonio Nieto spoke about the project NBA Europe, which, according to preliminary plans, could start as early as October 2027, and noted that his club will try to get into the tournament through participation in the national league or the Champions League.

“We will never be an NBA franchise. These franchises will be located in very big cities, so that’s their idea; cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Istanbul, London, Paris… These are the teams that will create 12 permanent franchises and they say that they will have to pay about 500 million over 10 years for a television contract. Then there are 4 places that other teams participating in the Champions League or domestic leagues can enter every year and take one of these 4 places. Our goal is, as they say – Although I do not know all the rules Unlike the Euroleague, if we play one year in the NBA, the income will be similar or close to what the team owners get.

I don’t know who will leave or what transitions will occur. However, I think it would be a mistake for both leagues to exist at the same time. Clear and stable agreements are needed to bring basketball into order, as it is now the most unregulated of all sports. There cannot be 4-5 European competitions. People have a hard time understanding this, their interests diverge, players focus too much on the matches, injuries happen too often. And it is difficult to gather spectators in halls where there are so many matches. Economically this is unprofitable, this is absurd.

This is a matter of ego, and all parties need to come to the table and use common sense to create a logical system with one major league with economic control and real profits. A second strong league could provide an opportunity to enter NBA Europe, Euroleague or whatever it is called. “This would make sense and create a more coherent map of European basketball.”

Previously, the owner of the Euroleague club criticized the NBA Europe project.
