Today the blue-yellows will face the Greek national team, which is seen by the vast majority of fans and experts as one of the main candidates for victory in the tournament.

The Greek team has a solid track record of performance in continental forums. Already in 1949 at the first European Championship for themselves, the Hellenes won a bronze medal, but the next success had to wait for a very long time. They came in the late 80’s, when Nikos Gallis’ star shone all over Europe. One of the continent’s best basketball players of his generation led Greece to the 1987 EuroBasket gold and silver medals at the tournament two years later. Greek fans had to wait for the next successes before the emergence of a new and very strong generation of players. And it was founded in the mid-2000s. Then the Greek national team with such masters as Dimitrios Diamantidis, Vassilis Spanoulis, Theodoras Papaloukas and others won EuroBasket 2005 and finished second in the next World Championship 2006 knocking out the USA team in the semifinals with LeBron James, Chris Paul, Duane Wade, Chris Bosh and other NBA stars are on the roster. This generation of players also brought bronze medals to their countries in EuroBasket 2009.

And now Greece has created a new team, serious and hungry for victories, which may be inferior to its predecessors in terms of overall skill level, but has a true megastar of world basketball in the person of Giannis Antetokounmpo. will be supported by a galaxy of talented artists.

The first EuroBasket matches showed that Dimitrios Agravanis fit in very well and is the most important link of the team. And I would like to dwell separately on the person of the naturalized American Tyler Dorsey. The former Olympiakos player did so well last season that he was promoted to the NBA this summer and will now play for the Dallas Mavericks. In the Greek national team, Dorsey is one of the key players, second only to Giannis in his role in the team. The presence of three Antetokounbo brothers simultaneously in the composition is also noteworthy.

Greece started their current European Championship with a tough match against Croatia. After a very successful first half, the Greeks performed much worse in the second part of the game, but with the help of Giannis’ skill and his partners they finally did their job. The Greeks opened the tournament with a win – 89:85. The second match against Italy was also difficult. Again, a tense ending, and the key word in it was uttered by Tyler Dorsey, who hit the hardest and most important three-pointer into the clutch. Another victory for the wards of Dimitris Itoudis by four points – 85:81. In the third game against Great Britain, the Hellenes were obviously not nervous. Giannis never entered the court, but this did not prevent them from achieving a confident victory – 93:77.

At EuroBasket 2022, Greece’s most prolific player is quite logically Giannis Antetokounmpo. He averaged 26 points + 11 rebounds per game in his first two games against Croatia and Italy. Next up are Tyler Dorsey (18.3 points in three games) and Kostas Sloukas (11.3 points in three games).

Fans in Ukraine were waiting for today’s match long before the tournament started. It’s very interesting to see how our team will fare against one of the main contenders for the medal in general and a major NBA star in particular. Ainars Bagatskis’ team will definitely fail in the next meeting, but it was the same in the match against Italy yesterday. It will be tough, but the blue-and-yellow team in this tournament has not been disappointed yet.
