In the 1/8 final of the EuroBasket, the Ukrainian team had perhaps the most suitable opponent possible. Ainars Bagatskis, who is also well known to the team: In a training tournament held in Istanbul in August, the Blue-Yellows defeated the Poles with 28 points. True, he missed AJ Slaughter, the defender of “Gran Canaria”, one of the leaders of the rival team in the tournament in Turkey. Alexey Len, who had just arrived on the team’s court the day before, did not play in that game.

Noting that the Poles are playing the right basketball, Ainars Bagatskis also mentioned that Poland should not be underestimated the previous day. “I told the team that Poland is an experienced, big and smart team. They don’t play with surprises, they play true, sometimes hard basketball. They often play at the expense of the opponent’s gifts and take well what is given to them. In a match with them, the important thing is discipline, consistency and aggression. This opponent is physical Ainars also noted that Mateusz Ponitka is the clear leader of the opponent, but Sloter, Balcerovski and Sokolovski should also be looked at.

The fight started quite tensely. Mikhailyuk and Len failed to score from behind the arc, Svyat also made a loss after interception and the Poles took a 5:0 lead. But two dunks from Len and Mikhailyuk dampened the opponent’s fire a little. Poland, however, acted quite confidently in the offensive. Slaughter caught the shot, hitting the back of the bow a few times – and of course, we had to be in the catch role, which didn’t add confidence. But we didn’t let the opponent go and we left the first timeout at minus 3 – 21:24.

The picture on the site did not change in the second quarter. We were approaching the opponent, but due to a technical malfunction, we allowed the Red-Whites to go into mini-timeouts again. Slaughter scored more goals than usual in the tournament in the middle of the second ten minutes – 13 points. Bobrov showed he’s great on our team: he took two long-range shots and landed a brilliant block hit. With 3:44 remaining in the quarter, we took a 38:37 lead for the first time after two consecutive narrow passages completed by Bliznyuk and Bobrov. Then, catching the shot, Bobrov added three from the back of the bow. Svyat went into the corridor and fell into Bliznyuk – three more, and the gap was already from Ukraine.

Unfortunately, in the end, after unnecessary losses, the “blue-yellows” allowed the opponents to enter a shooting range from behind the arc – 45:42. In general, the first half of the wards of Ainars Bagatskis can be included in the asset.

In the third quarter, the Poles were already catching up. They also did not allow our team to leave more than four points. As a leader, Mikhailyuk began to take over the game more – and his passes were both timely and effective. Now, if the arc flew to the Holy even from behind. However, the Poles escaped and Bagatskis had to take a time-out with a score of 59:59.

Pustovoy scored five consecutive points at the end of the quarter, but the Poles, who had three free throws on the final offense, advanced to the final section with a two-point advantage.

The nervous game started in the fourth quarter. Tkachenko fired two or three shots for us and then added a spectacular block shot. But we must give them credit. The Poles directed the snipers to open shots from the back of the bow. As a result, they managed to leave with 9 points. Blue-Yellows for 1.32 – 3 – reduced to 84:87. But there were not enough Ukrainians for more. 86:94 – humiliating defeat. Unfortunately, as Bagatskis said before the game, the Poles took what we gave.
