Germany – Spain. EuroBasket semi-finals predictions and announcement
The Germany-Spain meeting will be held in Berlin on Friday, September 16. The fight starts at 21:30 Kyiv time. The match will be broadcast live on Xsport TV channel.
The second semi-final at EuroBasket 2022 has a much more interesting sign than the first. Hosting the decisive matches of the tournament, the national teams of Germany and Spain will meet here. The second ticket to the final will be played between the owners of the continental championship and the most famous European team of the 21st century.
Germany
Before the start of the European Championship, the German team was rightly referred to as the “dark horses” of the tournament. Gold medals were not expected from the wards of Canadian head coach Gordy Herbert, but it was noted that with successful scenarios, the team could shoot and compete for high places. And he fired.
In the hardest eight, B, the Germans overplayed the starting stage of the EuroBasket, losing to the Slovenian national team in a personal meeting for the group championship, but at the same time beating and outpacing their toughest rivals in Europe. France, Lithuania and Bosnia in the ranking.
In the 1/8 final, Germany dominated most of the playing time in the duel with Montenegro, but the failure in the second half made “German car” fans nervous at the end of the meeting. Nevertheless, the Germans did not miss their chance and passed the top eight – 85:79.

In the quarter-final stage, the front hands were against Germany. After all, they took one of the main favorites of the tournament in the person of the Greek national team, with the leader Giannis Antetokounbo as the opponent. The host EuroBasket was expected to end here for Gordy Herbert’s team, but the German order outperformed the Greek class. After losing the first half, the Bundestim downgraded the Greeks in the third quarter – 26:10 and after Giannis was removed in the fourth ten minutes, it became clear that victory would not escape the Germans. And so it happened: the final whistle marked the victory of the German national team with a score of 107:96.
This success is largely associated with the successful team play of the German team. With a few individually strong basketball players, Gordy Herbert has established a system where no one pulls the blanket over themselves. And even a brilliant individualist like Dennis Schroeder reined in his gaming ego and playing for the team in most cases, he was the team’s top vice with a solid 7.2 assists. It is also listed as the Bundestim’s best sniper with an average of 20.2 points per game. It is followed by Franz Wagner (16.3 points) and Maodo Lo (12.7 points).
The German national team is one of the most balanced teams on the continental forum. Having quality players in every position, the Germans can easily maintain their high tempo throughout the match and impose their basketball on the opponent. It is as difficult as possible to knock out such a German-style and solid team from the tournament, and the home factor should not be forgotten.
Spain
During the playoffs, FIBA tweeted: “Basketball is a simple game: ten people chase the ball for 40 or 45 minutes and in the end Spain wins.” Thus, Gary Lineker’s famous football quote about the Germans was turned into a basketball motif. And indeed, on the European continent in this century it is difficult to find a more suitable team for the place of stable winners than the Spanish team.
It was the same at EuroBasket. Spaniards, at the very epicenter of the generational shift, were, of course, among the medal candidates, but they were far from first or second on this list. And most likely, the fifth after Slovenia, Greece, Serbia and France. And now most of this list is watching the European Championships on TV and the Pyrenees continue their medal campaigns. It looks like this team can’t fly in the early stages. Think about it, Spain hasn’t missed the EuroBasket semi-finals since 1999.
At the current European Championship, the Spaniards continue to show their championship DNA. In the 1/8 final match against Lithuania, Sergio Scariolo’s guards were on the verge of defeat, they played in overtime, but in a nervous game they beat the Balts – 102:94. The quarter-final against Finland was also not easy for Furia Rohi. In it, for the first time in the history of the European Championship, the Spaniards missed 50 points in the first half, but after the break they showed here the real best continental basketball, the Finns. Spain won 100:90 and advanced to the semi-finals.

In terms of statistics, the team leaders are the Hernangomes brothers from the NBA (Willie 17.9 points + 7.1 rebounds and Juancho 10.7 points + 5.3 rebounds) and naturalized American Lorenzo Brown (13.4 points + 7.3 gears). But I really want to talk about Real Madrid veteran Rudy Fernandez. The representative of this golden and almost invincible Spanish team is the true heart of the team. His extensive experience allows him to make many good decisions and score important goals, and the scale of his contribution to winning results does not reflect any statistical figures.
The Spanish national team remains a formidable force, capable of breaking any opponent, even in the regime of perestroika. The Pyrenees can find weak spots even in supposedly stronger teams and hit them very hard. It remains only to find out if the coaching team of Furies Roja, led by the highly experienced Sergio Scariolo, can find an Achilles heel with the Germans.
***
Predicting the winner in the second semi-final pair is much more difficult than in the first. Both teams have experienced and talented basketball players and can present their trump cards to their opponents. We’d dare suggest that home walls will still help the Germans get into the main game of the tournament.

Crazy money. Cost of permanent NBA Europe franchises revealed
Unicaja President Antonio Nieto spoke about the project NBA Europe, which, according to preliminary plans, could start as early as October 2027, and noted that his club will try to get into the tournament through participation in the national league or the Champions League.
“We will never be an NBA franchise. These franchises will be located in very big cities, so that’s their idea; cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Istanbul, London, Paris… These are the teams that will create 12 permanent franchises and they say that they will have to pay about 500 million over 10 years for a television contract. Then there are 4 places that other teams participating in the Champions League or domestic leagues can enter every year and take one of these 4 places. Our goal is, as they say – Although I do not know all the rules Unlike the Euroleague, if we play one year in the NBA, the income will be similar or close to what the team owners get.
I don’t know who will leave or what transitions will occur. However, I think it would be a mistake for both leagues to exist at the same time. Clear and stable agreements are needed to bring basketball into order, as it is now the most unregulated of all sports. There cannot be 4-5 European competitions. People have a hard time understanding this, their interests diverge, players focus too much on the matches, injuries happen too often. And it is difficult to gather spectators in halls where there are so many matches. Economically this is unprofitable, this is absurd.
This is a matter of ego, and all parties need to come to the table and use common sense to create a logical system with one major league with economic control and real profits. A second strong league could provide an opportunity to enter NBA Europe, Euroleague or whatever it is called. “This would make sense and create a more coherent map of European basketball.”
Previously, the owner of the Euroleague club criticized the NBA Europe project.
