Korom: “We know they expect a lot from us, but so does where we come from.”
Senior Team 2019 World Champion, Joaquim “Quino” Colom (Andorra la Vella, 1988) was excluded. euro basketball With my last breath, I saw from Girona how his friends multiplied BerlinColum, who is cautious when talking about goals, Marc Gasol and the desire to go back CBA they he Basketball Girona. Andorran looks back on his basketball career, predicts victory in league debut real madrid.
How did your relationship with basketball begin?
My father was a basketball player and was still playing when I was born. I don’t remember much, I think I even got to watch the game, but it’s in my blood. Basketball was always a big topic at home and my brother and I were instantly hooked.
Did you only see basketball?
I have always been into tennis. I played both sports until she was 14 or he was 15. Then I had to choose one or the other, but I was better at basketball, so I chose this path.
Russia, Turkey, Serbia, Greece… how did you come to Girona?
I have had many experiences abroad. I learned different cultures and it was a very good experience not only at the basketball level but also at the important level. It all started when I got along very well with Mark and started talking to him in the summer. I had already followed the project since we had been in touch over the last few years and knew that it was a very interesting project and a place where very nice things could be done. Pulled in and everything went pretty fast in the end. Mark and I talked about it and eventually it actually happened.
What role would you like to play within the team?
I am one of the veterans on the team and always wanted to take the lead when I played better. It’s also true that as a first-time subscriber and veteran, I aim to play the best game I can, help my teammates, lead by example, and win as many games as possible. It’s too early to talk about roles.
How is the preseason balanced?
It’s a little strange because, as is often the case in the summer, I arrived late and the players are still arriving. At the moment, I think the team is taking measures and I think there will come a time when we can play well. Hopefully you can win many games. We are learning and evolving. I want to start the league first.
What do you think is Aito’s differentiating touch compared to other coaches?
From what I’ve seen, he pays attention to detail. It seems basic at times, but is often ignored at the professional level. In the end, many coaches have their own systems and often it gets out of hand. It’s a system. On the other hand, in Aíto it’s essential to read the game, watch your defense and know which teammates you’re playing with. Everything has an adaptation process, but I think the players who read the game on the court will be stronger. I’m used to playing a lot of pick and roll here as well, but it’s a different approach to the game and I think it works really well.
Are my expectations too high?
In teams with big names there is always a certain level of expectations. In ACB, every team has important players. Certainly, having a player like Marc and Aito as a coach creates expectations for people. We know they expect a lot from us. The city has a clear understanding of that, and I think fans will have to wait patiently.
Will you watch the team in the Copa del Rey?
I think it’s still too early to talk about such distant goals. I haven’t trained with everyone on the team yet, but the important thing is to start every day and improve little by little, to build a team that has potential and plays well.
What about the experience of having a boss as a teammate?
This is the first time I’ve encountered such a situation. There was a team in Russia with a president/coach/player who only played in important games. It was a strange situation because I’m not used to seeing that kind of thing. Mark and I are friends, we communicate well, so we get along well here. It doesn’t affect us much. He[Marc Gasol]has a lot of work to do and we in the locker room don’t see it. Ultimately, he’s a very good leader and he’s imposing wherever he goes.
What do you think is necessary to ensure that the project has a path and that akashvayu does not occur and disappear?
Have a good base This Marc does a very good job and I think that’s also one of the reasons I’m here. He has a very clear idea of building a solid foundation. In the end, I think Akasvayu arrived like a checkbook, but Marc had very clear ideas and letting Ait start the season with his ACB was an important step. Hopefully it works as well as it can.
Speaking of Akasvayu, have you ever come across a non-paying or unresponsive club?
Unfortunately if. Quite a few clubs have had problems with this. That’s part of the job, too. It’s improving in Spain, but when I was in Turkey I had a lot of problems getting paid. I know Greece has its fair share of problems too. Although it occurs less and less now, it is still very frequent in Europe.
Do players have a mechanism to claim pending payments?
Yes, Spain has an Association of Professional Basketball Players (ABP). There is also European level insurance to pay players. It’s true that there are mechanisms, but when the amounts are so large that they end up in court or the club disappears, it all complicates and complicates everything. Sometimes people don’t know that in the end it’s our job and we’ve been in the truck at the bottom of the canyon and haven’t been paid for three months. Fortunately, in Spain, these situations are getting more and more under control.
You commented that it’s too early to talk about roles… what advice would you like to give young people?
I was lucky because of the economy. First, I have always loved numbers. Second, because my parents are bankers in Andorra. We have seen many rich people and people who have made and lost money. My parents taught me to manage the economy well. I help a lot of people with this. I have colleagues who have called for advice and I will tell them what I did or what worked. After all, you should be aware that you may be making unusual money right now, but you will run out of money pretty quickly when you retire. Once you get used to a very fast-paced life, it’s hard to change later. I’ve also met a lot of people who went bankrupt… Knowing how to control the economy is important.
A few days ago we celebrated the third anniversary of our World Cup victory in China. Left out of Eurobasket at the last breath…how did it go?
The truth is that living the World Cup is a unique experience. This year was a different experience because in the end I was left out of the team…but you always have to support the team. The truth is that living the World Cup was a unique experience.Every player has their moments and I managed to live my dream so I can’t complain. I want to live more moments like this.
How will you manage this adverse situation?
Details. Some years it goes in, some years it doesn’t. Even if you talk to the team in the summer, sometimes things don’t go well. I always think that we should look at the positive side. For the national team, being on the road allowed me to spend more time in Girona, getting to know the team and learning the game system. i will stay with this.
Sometimes things don’t go your way… how do you deal with them?
it’s complicated. I study psychology he has been studying for 4-5 years and I like reading about it. I always try to take the positive side and relativize it. Over the years, we have learned to solve the smallest problems and everything helps us learn. Everything has happened to me, from being an idol in the stands to being whistled. Some places feel worth it, some don’t. But in the end, you can only focus on what depends on you. Because things that you cannot control are always flying above you.
It is rumored that new recruits summoned through the selection process will pay the veteran a dinner. Have you had time to keep a good taste in your mouth?
Yes yes (laughs). This takes place in the first week, but remember I was focused on his 25 days. I’ve been enjoying myself. You can always enjoy the selection. This dinner has been like this for his 15+ years and creates a very good atmosphere, so what a good thing. I have a record of paying the most for dinner…! Moreover, I was in Bilbao at the time, in a more difficult economic situation…
how much did he have to pay
Better not! (smile).
You share a pavilion with Spa Girona. Looking closer, what do you think is missing to match opportunities with the men’s league?
I’ve always followed the women’s league, but even more since I was in Valencia. I think it’s done well here, but it’s also true that it’s unsatisfactory. I also think that more international players have returned to the Spanish league in recent years. This shows that things are being done better. People are beginning to understand that we should all have the same opportunities.
Do you feel you have a responsibility to give players more opportunities and increase interest in the women’s league?
I think a lot of players are trying to do their thing. For example, when I played for Valencia, I went to a lot of women’s games and I like going to games, so I’ll be coming here as well. But you can help in many ways. We also have a podcast (Basketcast). This is ultimately a platform to talk to many players and get their point of view. I think we’re taking steps, but everything has a process. Sometimes you wish things could go faster, but I think you’re on the right track.
Tickets for the league debut against Real Madrid are sold out and the Fontahau Pavilion is expected to burst. What can you expect from this match?
It won’t be easy (laughs). But it’s also a good way to start. Good games make people happy. I also don’t like having nothing to lose. I think there is a level to do beautiful things.
What are your predictions for the debut match?
we win 85-81.
