The Executive Committee of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has decided to remove the Russian women’s team from participation in the qualifying tournament of the European Championship in 2023, the organization’s website reports.
In the spring, FIBA announced the suspension of Russian teams and clubs from participating in competitions under its auspices in 2022 due to the situation in Ukraine.
“Today’s decision, which comes after careful consideration of developments in Ukraine, the decisions of the FIBA Executive Committee and the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee, means that Russia and Belarus are suspended from the upcoming EuroBasket qualifiers in November 2022 and February 2023.
The results of these two teams in their groups will be declared invalid in accordance with the current rules, the FIBA press service said.
The European Basketball Championship in 2023 will be held in Slovenia and Israel.
