The elimination of Hapoel Tel Aviv in the semi-finals of the cup and people’s reactions have once again put Giannis Sfairopoulos in a miserable position at Maccabi, with Israeli reports saying his future is now open.

Giannis Sfeiropoulos’ position on Maccabi’s bench is – once again – precarious. The defeat by Hapoel Tel Aviv (80-90) in the semi-finals of the cup and – above all – the reactions of the Maccabi fans who tried to book in the dressing room after the game have weighed heavily on the mood for the Greek coach the Israeli media.

According to Sports Walla, Maccabi officials are unhappy with the way Sfeiropoulos managed the game with Hapoel and in particular with the fact that he decided to take James Nanali and Derrick Williams out of the mission with him to tell an (anonymous) source in the Maccabi administration that “Giannis didn’t handle the second half of the game well. It’s unforgivable how the game ended.”

Another source within the group even stated in the specific medium that “Perhaps the team has no choice but to change coaches. with Maccabi having a few days without commitments to count as good timing for a potential move.

At the same time, “Sport5” emphasizes in its own article that the margins for the Greek coach have narrowed. It even supports this view on two negative records: 1. Maccabi lost for the first time in their history from Hapoel Tel Aviv in a knockout phase at home (until yesterday they were 23-0). 2. For the first time since 1969 he suffered three defeats in the same season against Hapoel Tel Aviv.

Maccabi now looks like a boiling cauldron, with Israeli media recalling that the issue of Sfeiropoulos was raised and by then the club would publicly support him a few months ago. It remains to be seen what will follow, with John Di Bartolomeo (again) backing his coach with statements stating that ““Our coach is our leader.”
