Monaco beat Bayern Munich and continue chasing the top of the EuroLeague
Monaco climbed to 7-3 by beating Bayern Munich (80-79) and stayed in the group while Olympiaco and Real Madrid chased leaders Fenerbahce.
Their records were reversed (6-3 – 3-6) but Monaco and Bayern played an even game on Friday night (25/11) at the Sala Gaston Medesan. In the final, however, it was the Monegasques who celebrated the 10th match day of the EuroLeague with 80:79.
The Monte Carlo team improved to 7-3 (4-1 home and 3-2 away) with Eli Okombo carrying them through the crisis and Mike James having a quiet night by his standards. Augustin Rubitt was Bayern’s top scorer and lone standout in a performance that had plenty but not much quality from Bayern, who fell behind to 3-7 (1-4 home and 2-3 away).
With James on Fire (5 points and 2 assists), Monaco built a nine-point lead early on (13-4), but Bayern had more momentum and ended the period on three points despite a 0/6 on three points -3 (17- 14). Bayern’s tenacity at 14′ led to 22:26 (singles 9:22), but at half time their impressive rebound performance (27) was overshadowed by minimal creation (4 assists from 9 errors) against the Monegasques of 58%. in two points and nine assists for seven turnovers.
The score remained low in the third quarter as Okombo took Monaco on his back and scored back-to-back baskets to make it 61-55 after 33 minutes. In the 36th minute he scored the three to make it 67:57, after which Monaco ended the game. Bayern couldn’t give up the game but the distance was too big for them and they couldn’t make it despite Gifai-Obst’s combined shots in the final.
