Final Four – Greek Cup: Heraklion gave up their credentials

The first dish of the Final Four might not have been very palatable in terms of competition, but it turned out to be enough to confirm everyone’s opinion that Heraklion has the know-how to host large events.

When Vangelis Liolios announced that the Greek Cup would return to Final Four logic to judge the 2022 Trophy winner, everyone thought if such a thing was possible. And how can all this effort be “built up” and protected from external influences and problems (see violence and … offences).

Somehow the case of Heraklion stood out as the best possible. The theory was confirmed in practice when “Dyo Aorakia” became “excellent” in the first competition they held during the two semifinals of the Final Four on Friday, February 18th.

The presence of around 2,000 friends from the four teams in the same stadium did not cause the slightest problem. The absence of the organized friends of the clubs not only made everyone’s work (and life) easier, but gave the games a much different color.

Simply because the scattered voices and slogans created a beautiful feeling for those who were in “Dyo Aorakia”. They referred to conditions like the ones they experience every year in Spain at the Copa del Rey. Of course, Greece is far behind in reaching this level. But nobody can ignore (or neglect) that the first step (step) that was taken was not only encouraging, but gave the organizers – much more – a reason to smile.

Heraklion received the first ‘very good’ of these three days and showed ready to finish this year’s event with a corresponding score. No, Panathinaikos OPAP’s clash with Olympiakos in the final on Sunday 20 February will not be a problem for strong solvers. Thorough scrutiny by the Federation and the police over the manner and people delivering the invitations has paid off to see the image we saw in Dyo Aorakia.

The know-how in hosting major events has been confirmed in the practice of Heraklion, which is now tending to emerge (if it hasn’t already) as the first choice for similar situations in the future. Even if we are talking about the Final Eight that the association is planning for next season.

The passion is there, the experience and the mood for the result as well, so what could be nicer …

The first taste of the Final Four was sweet and everyone on the island believes it will be the last one – the one that will count more and be on everyone’s lips.

Sportish is located in Crete with the support of the Crete Region, which hosts the Greek Cup Final Four, the event that further enhances the uniqueness and wealth of experiences that the island offers its visitors.

PLEKHANOV: “There are also a few points I would like to point out”

Head coach of “Kharkov Falcons” Valery Plekhanov He summarized the team’s 2025 results and talked about the preparations for the continuation of the season:

“Summing up the results of the calendar year, I want to congratulate all our fans on the upcoming New Year and Merry Christmas, wish our favorite team peace and good victories! “Kharkov Falcons” are the first players of this Super League season, so second place at the moment is a good result.

There are a few points we would like to emphasize separately. First of all, seven players from last season’s active squad won the Premier League together, but five of them never played in the Super League. Therefore, the experience they gained in the first half of this season is almost priceless. Secondly, Kharkiv Falcons are one of the two champion teams that did not play a single match at home. It’s very difficult when you’re not playing for your fans, you’re training in one gym, and you’re playing in a different gym every time, even on home tours. In these conditions, 4 defeats in 13 matches is a good result.

One of the most negative moments of this year was not being able to participate in the last four of the Ukrainian Cup. Unfortunately, we were a little unlucky in the draw. After an emotionally difficult and physically exhausting match with Krivbass, we did not have enough strength for the next match against Kiev-Basket in the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, our performances in the cup are over, but now we will be able to focus all our efforts on the championship.

Our main problem now is injuries. We have five injured players, three of whom have serious injuries that require a long recovery period. We’re about to get off to a very tough start to the new calendar season because the Falcons will be playing basketball six weekends in a row, which means six road trips with no rest time. If we could count on all twelve players in the squad at the beginning of the season, there will no longer be such a rotation. Therefore, all the responsibility and burden will fall on the players in the rankings. I hope they get over their injuries in the new year, recover from their injuries as soon as possible, return to work and help their beloved club properly represent Kharkiv in the Super League.

Despite the holidays, we have training scheduled almost seven days a week. “I really hope that by January 10 we will be a combat-ready team that can solve serious problems.”
