In this context, Giorgos Bartzokas decided to attack more often than usual in a pick-and-roll situation in the first year after Vezenkov’s sight protection and not with his center.
That night Vezenkov had 28 points with just 1 dribble, the Bulgarian forward led the pick and roll, scoring 6 points from 4 possessions. In fact, he scored 8 points as a follow-up he scored came after his pick and roll with Isaiah Kanan and a miss from the American.

Of course, for all of this to happen, a player had to read what the opposing defense was giving. That was Tomas walkup who had 15 points and 10 assists from which Olympiacos got 25 points! He was collectively responsible – directly or indirectly – for 40 of the team’s 93 points.
With Alba choosing to play level on the pick and roll first (the big one would step at screener level before returning to his player) and assist on the roll from the weak side, the American began free-picking his teammates find shots to the opposite side. This prompted Alba to make adjustments. But it was too late.
The Germans tried to be more aggressive on the pick and roll, hedge out (the big one went heavily to the ball handler before returning to his player). But Walkup had adjusted by now. The defense that handicapped Sikma and Alba

1. In half-court situations, she runs her entire game through Luke Sikma (probably the best tall passer in Europe) and everyone knows it.
2. She has no vertical play as none of her players can create their own shot except for Maodo Lo (who didn’t play due to injury). In fact, according to InStat Scout, they are the team that attempts the fewest drives (passes) in the EuroLeague with just 6.4 per game (Olympiacos are 4th from the bottom in this category with 7.5 per game).
With this in mind, Olympiacos first decided to apply the logic of the changes to all screens. Not afraid that either Tamir Blatt or Jalin Smith will try to break through the defense (both prefer to shoot after dribbling), the “Red-Whites” made the substitutions with ease. Next they proceeded to the second part of their plan on Sikmas.
While Alba was looking for the American striker in the misses near the basket, Olympiakos immediately sent help – that is, double along – with his centre. In fact, there were times when the Olympiakos center started helping before Sikma even touched the ball and only saw the pass. He immediately threw him a big body, forcing the German players to move.
