The women’s national team’s qualification for EuroBasket Women 2023 through the eyes of Sotiriou, Spanos and Stamatis
Katerina Sotiriou, Artemis Spanou and Evina Stamati spoke to the EEC website about qualifying for EuroBasket Women 2023 and the impact it can have.
The women’s national team again secured participation in the final stages of the EuroBasket Women and had the opportunity to compete with the top teams in Europe. A few days after the end of the qualification process, Katerina Sotiriou, Artemis Spanou and Evina Stamati spoke on the EEC website about the success of the “blue and white” and what it can bring as a result.
In detail what they stated on the EEC website:
– What’s the one thing you won’t forget from the overall EuroBasket Women 2023 qualifiers?
Sotiriou: “I certainly remember the first game in Manchester. We had only been together as a team for five days with the new coaching staff and we came on the pitch just before warm up because we were moving. The team was particularly stressed and we got together and said: ‘Guys, we have everything in our heads and this team has to adapt to the existing conditions. There is a strength in the women’s national team and stress must become our energy.” So there was not only action, but also a great team win and an ideal start to qualifying. There was absolute focus and the will to find yourself and present yourself the way we should. We competed as a team, despite fears that no athlete would be performing their routine. It was the first game with the new team and we don’t know each other well, but we showed that we can go one step further. From then on, the national team began to show that with victory and performance, they can reach qualification“.
Spanu: “I vividly remember the moment when we beat Great Britain in Rhodes and now we knew we’d qualified with 80%. In general, the whole course with my fellow athletes will remain unforgettable to me. It was something we wanted and we put a lot of energy, passion and soul into making it happen“.
To stop: “Of course, I won’t forget the match against Great Britain in Rhodes, which qualified us for the final stages of the EuroBasket. It was a crucial game that we managed and won“.
– Beyond the presence of Greece in another EuroBasket Women finals, what can this qualification mean?
Sotiriou: “The fact is that the women’s national team has been present in the Eurobasket for 15 years. Qualification is not a given and I consider it a great achievement for women’s basketball. We have a new generation that is starting to gain experience and be in big teams. However, time must be given to build up much better and with maturity for him to take steps and win in the Eurobasket. It’s very important to me to get more kids interested in basketball. The national team should be a motivation for young children and they should understand what a favorite team means“.
Spanu: “Our presence shows that we are at this level and can keep up with the other European teams. That’s an additional incentive for us to get even better and to show in the summer that this team isn’t just being overtaken, but is capable of something“.
To stop: “Qualifying for women’s basketball in Greece is very important. We’re among the top 16 teams in Europe, which is important both for Greece and for us personally. That was our goal and we achieved it…“.
– What should the women’s national team do better in Eurobasket to have a good run?
Sotiriou: “For example, we never had the luxury of having 100 athletes and making the selections. Every player and every personality is important. First of all I hope that we are healthy, that we have improved and that we have progressed mentally and physically to present better than we are now. We are a country that is not superior in terms of huge bodies, speed and number of female athletes. Nevertheless, we are among the 16 best teams in Europe at the highest level. Exploiting opponents’ weaknesses and turning our disadvantages into advantages. So let’s go one step further“.
Spanu: “We’ll definitely be underdogs again and they won’t expect much from us, so we want to show our best side too. To showcase what we know as a national team, our passion, love for this team and playing hard in every game to show the best face we can. If we do this, the result will come“.
To stop: “The peculiarity of this tournament is that the games are played one after the other. So it’s important to go game by game, isolate everything and look straight to the next. The details make the difference as the teams are very strong with experienced players who have been playing together for years. It is a great motivation for us that we will be part of this event“.
