Yasikevitsyus on the war in Ukraine: “It will stigmatize our lives, it is worse than a pandemic”
Barcelona coach Saronas Yassikevitsios spoke about the war in Ukraine and how the Russian invasion will stigmatize people’s lives, stressing that this war is worse than a pandemic.
The war situation in Ukraine and the wider region could not leave the Lithuanian coach of Barcelona Saronas Jasikevicius untouched, who erupted in his statements about the prevailing situation.
He didn’t hesitate to call the war “worse than a pandemic” and criticized Putin for his thirst for power. At the same time, the experienced coach emphasized that this situation will stigmatize everyone’s life and all this must stop immediately.
“I feel terrible, to be honest. I watch TV all the time and the big world channels. Every morning I come here with my colleagues and I talk about basketball, but it’s not easy. We can’t avoid it, I wake up in the morning and check my phone what happened last night hoping Kyiv is still in ukrainian hands.
Maybe you don’t understand the situation when you’re here. We’ve always lived on the other side of the world and we’ve always seen what happens. We have to take it seriously. This has to stop now.
Spain needs to be more aggressive. I know I get involved where I’m not seeded, but I think so. We don’t know how far this man (ss Putin) can go. We must do everything to help the Ukrainians. As a Lithuanian citizen, I will follow the government’s advice and put basketball second if necessary. I think something similar will be announced in the coming days.
That has to stop. He can’t go any further. It’s just a man’s desire for sovereignty. If people think they’ve come a long way from all of this, they should think again. I’ve always been against politics, but this isn’t politics, this is war. You go to Facebook or see photos and feel terrible. It will stigmatize our lives. “This is worse than a pandemic.”
