Serelis: “Extremely professional treatment of Tomas, it was a difficult decision to remove him from the Basket League”
Christos Serelis admitted he had a hard time letting Matt Thomas out of the Basketball League, but emphasized that the American accepted the decision as a professional, also citing Lefteris Mantzoukas.
Panathinaikos has completed its preparations for tomorrow’s (23.3.) game against Barcelona (8.30 p.m., Novasports 4 and LIVE by Sportish) for the 30th matchday of the EuroLeague, where without Bacon and Ponitka with Christos Serelis they will play the game, the decision , favoring Grigonis over Tomas for the Basket League, and the performance of Lefteris Mandzoukas.
The Greek technician explained in detail:
For the spirit… of the sacrifice for Panathinaikos and the Barcelona game:”That was the first thing we asked for. We came in February and I don’t think we can convince in attack. We had to… make sacrifices and risk our bodies to achieve victories. Each player also had to produce data they hadn’t shown since the beginning of the year, and often over a long period of time. Barcelona are a team with a lot of strength and we have to do our best with a defensive effort.”.
For absences: “We won’t have Ponitka and Bacon in this match.”.
On the selection of Grigonis over Thomas for the Basket League and the American’s reaction: “He is 100% professional. Although he’s only been with Panathinaikos for a short time, it’s like he’s been with the team since the beginning of the year. After my own arrival, he went to great lengths to change the coaching staff.
Unfortunately I was only able to make one change. It was a tough decision and whatever I chose would be unfair! We thought about who is closer to the Greek reality and would help us build the team. I guess I couldn’t help but choose Grigonis. Tomas’ treatment is highly professional and how much he thinks of the team despite his disappointment.”
On the Derrick Williams situation: “He has a very minor injury that he could rest for a few games if we were different. We tried it with PAOK, but it’s not easy as we’ve seen.
We want to win, but the fact that we have no hope of making the playoffs doesn’t leave us indifferent. We played all the games. Resting Williams isn’t easy, nor is Lee, who also has a problem. We want to recharge our batteries and win. So we try to manage it. He’s not comfortable in all games and has played many with self-sacrifice.”
On Manjuka’s performance: “The magic word is consistency. What we expect from every player is that they never feel safe, never feel comfortable in the sense that they have to keep working and claiming things.
We expect him to stabilize his performance and become a constant for the team. We expect the same from other children. I have no complaints from them. They all try. It’s not very easy to win and they take time. We have minimal training and are trying to accommodate them all.”

NBA: Barnes’ powerful triple-double, Detroit defeat and Lakers victory
Six games were played in the NBA regular season on the night of December 28-29.
Toronto hosted Golden State and earned a hard-fought overtime victory.
The Raptors had a better first quarter, during which they broke away from their opponent by 10 points (33:23), but the Warriors leveled this difference quite quickly and by the end of the second quarter they were already +6 – 56:50. However, they were unable to maintain their advantage, at least until the big break when the home team took the lead at 65:64.
In the third quarter, Golden State took the initiative and took the lead by 12 points (95:83), but at the end of the quarter, Toronto made an 8:0 move, reducing the gap to 4 points (96:100). However, the guest team started the fourth quarter better and stayed two or three shots away from their opponents. This continued until the middle of the quarter, and then Toronto slowly began to close the gap, tying the score at 120:120 47 seconds before the siren, thanks to Quickley’s three-pointer. Podzemski then hit a two-pointer to put the Warriors back in front, but Barnes responded with a two-pointer with 24 seconds left in the quarter, sending the game into overtime. The home team started the match with a score of 10:0 and then calmly maintained its advantage with a score of 141:127 and scored 5 points in 5 minutes.
Barnes recorded a triple-double with 23 points, 25 rebounds and 10 assists for Toronto. The most productive player of the match was Curry, but the 39 points he scored did not help the guest team win.
The Clippers hosted Detroit and won a sensational victory.
The home team was ahead by 19 points (33:14) in the first quarter, and then remained ahead throughout the entire match, reaching its maximum advantage of 26 points (95:69) at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Before the end of the game, the opponent regained half of this handicap, but this did not help the Pistons fully return to the game. As a result, the Clippers earned a landslide victory with a score of 112:99.
The most productive player of the match was Leonard, who achieved a double-double by scoring 55 points and collecting 11 rebounds, which was almost half of the Clippers’ entire set.
The Lakers defeated Sacramento after a series of underachievement.
Özernye, who took the initiative from the beginning of the game, gradually increased his advantage, won all quarters of the match and was defeated with a score of 125:101.
For the Lakers, Doncic scored 34 points and Ayton had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

“Victories over Euroleague teams, the Super Cup in Belgrade, the birth of Jean-Charles’ twins.” Vatutin named the brightest moments of 2025
President of basketball CSKA Andrei Vatutin, in a conversation with Match TV, named the brightest moments of the outgoing year, and also told how to meet 2026.
At the end of the 2024/25 season, CSKA became the champion of the VTB United League. In the current regular season, the army team is in the lead, having won 16 victories in 18 games.
— How satisfied are you with 2025?
— First of all, I would like to say that the team we have now is very dear to me. I am often asked: which season’s team do you like the most? For some reason, everyone thinks that the answer will be related to our victories in the Euroleague. Not at all. Every year we have a unique team. I’m happy to work with the guys we have today. I really value the victories in the United League that we achieved with this Team. That’s right, with a capital letter. The guys communicate well with each other. We have a great environment in the dressing room. I am very glad that our veterans – Kurbanov, Antonov, Ukhov – continue their careers. They mean a lot to me and to CSKA.
It is clear that if you won the championship in the past year, there is no reason to be dissatisfied with the sports result. But again, I’m happy to work with the coaching staff, our players, our club office and I would like everyone to be healthy and for us to continue to win together. I think everyone will have a lot of wishes in their New Year’s toasts. But surely each of the CSKA employees, players and coaches will wish us good luck and that there will be no injuries. If everything goes well, then there will be victories.
In addition to winning the championship, our team had many more bright moments. Birth of twins to Livio Jean-Charles. We played the pre-season in Dubai for the first time. The United League Super Cup was played for the first time in Belgrade. Plus we beat two Euroleague teams, which doesn’t mean anything, but in principle it indicates that we can now play with Euroleague teams. And I’ll probably also note Kurbanov’s pass to Livio in Krasnodar, when they scored 0.6 seconds before the end. A very bright moment. This suggests that basketball has become faster over the past decades: what took three seconds in Munich was now decided in 0.6.
Of course, my family gives me many very bright positive moments.
— How will you celebrate the New Year? What will be on the festive table?
— In Moscow, with my family. As always, it will be delicious. I generally love to eat (laughs). So to say that today I eat tasteless, but on New Year’s Day it’s delicious, would be wrong. Before the chimes, as always, we will listen to Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin’s New Year’s address. Then we’ll have a glass of champagne, and then maybe move on to red wine.
— The Year of the Fire Horse is ahead. Does this mean that CSKA must definitely become the champion?
— (Laughs) I’ll say this: we don’t owe anyone anything. Whether it’s the year of the blue Horse or the Ox, our goals remain the same: we will try to please our fans. The Year of the Red Horse does not impose additional responsibilities and obligations. Of course, it’s nice that it’s the Year of the Horse, but it will be all the more interesting and enjoyable to ride this horse. Our competitors will probably oppose this. It is clear that the New Year’s toasts of the leaders of UNICS, Zenit, and Lokomotiv will also be for victory. Now is the middle of the season, and the most interesting is ahead,” Vatutin told Match TV.
