Stepanovsky became the 12th coach of the Ukrainian national team
41-year-old Vitaliy Stepanovsky became the 12th coach of the Ukraine national basketball team. We remember all the previous mentors of the Blue-Yellows.
Zaurbek Khromaev (1992–1997)
Matches – 34 (20 wins/14 losses)
The Ukrainian national team failed to participate in EuroBasket 1993 and EuroBasket 1995, and entered EuroBasket 1997 and placed 13th.
Vladislav Pustogarov (1997-1998)
Matches – 5 (2 wins/3 losses)
Ukraine national team, led by Vladislav Pustogarov, managed to play half of the EuroBasket-1999 qualifying matches, beating England and Belarus, losing to Spain, Israel and Denmark.
Vladimir Ryzhov (1998–2000)
Matches – 12 (6 wins/4 losses)
Vladimir Ryzhov finished the EuroBasket 1999 selection by winning three of the five matches and succeeding in bringing the national team to the European Championship. In the EuroBasket-2001 selection, the national team started with confident victories against Iceland, Portugal and Belgium, but then lost to their rivals in the fight for tickets to the continental championship of Slovenia and Macedonia.
Gennady Zashchuk (2000–2005)
Matches – 30 (15 wins/15 losses)
Gennady Zashchuk was tasked with finishing the EuroBasket-2001 selection and won four of the five matches, leading the national team to the European Championship. Then Zashchuk made two more successful interventions. In the qualifying matches, they have 14 wins in 21 matches. As the head coach of the national team, he did not lose a single official match in Kiev, but overall he lost only once at home – in the EuroBasket 2005 selection with Dirk Nowitzki in the South Germany national team.
At the European Championships, the team led by Gennady Zashchuk performed less successfully – winning only one of nine matches in three EuroBaskets. The Ukrainian national team took the 14th place twice, and once again the 16th.
Vitaly Lebedintsev (2006–2007)
Matches – 7 (3 wins/4 losses)
Under the leadership of Vitaliy Lebedintsev, the Ukrainian team won three of the six matches played in the first stage of the qualifying, and finished third in their group with Poland, Sweden and Bulgaria. In the additional qualifying tournament, Ukraine started by defeating Belgium 45:70 at home, after which Lebedintsev resigned.
Valentin Berestnev and. HE. (2007)
Matches – 5 (1 win / 4 loss)
With Valentin Berestnev, the Ukrainian team failed to qualify for the European Championship, winning one of the additional selections for EuroBasket 2007 in Denmark and losing the other four matches.
Valentin Melnichuk (2008–2009)
Matches – 12 (5 wins/7 losses)
Valentyn Melnichuk and the Ukraine national team failed to qualify for the second consecutive EuroBasket, winning only one of the five matches in the selection. Beyond the right to stay in Group A, the team won 4 of 6 games and finished second in the group and remained in the League.
Vitaly Cherniy (2010)
Matches – 8 (3 wins/5 losses)
In the EuroBasket 2011 qualifiers, the national team of Ukraine won three of eight matches and placed fourth in the five-man group, but thanks to FIBA’s decision to increase the final to 24 teams, our national team participated in the European Championship. But a new mentor was preparing the team for the EuroBasket.
Mike Fratello (2011-2015)
Matches – 29 matches (16 wins/13 losses)
American coach Mike Fratello took over the head of the Ukraine national team in February 2011. The American has worked with the team in two EuroBaskets and the World Championships. If at EuroBasket 2011 he won two of five games and finished 17th with the national team, in 2013 the team under his leadership placed sixth at the European Championship and qualified for the World Championship. At the world championship in Spain, the Ukrainian team won two of the five matches and did not leave the group, finishing the final in 18th place.
Evgeny Murzin (2015-2019)
Matches – 31 (14 wins / 17 losses)
Evgeny Murzin has been the head of the men’s national team since 2015. The Ukrainian team automatically entered the 2015 European Championship (our country was supposed to be one of the co-organizers of the championship) and took 22nd place, winning one of five matches.
After that, Murzin led the national team to EuroBasket 2017, where the team advanced to the playoffs and took the final 15th place. After that, the team failed to reach the 2019 World Cup.
Ainars Bagatskiler (2019-2023)
24 matches (13 wins/11 losses)
In his three and a half years as head coach, Ainars Bagatskis managed to win the qualifying group and qualify for the 2021 European Championship, leading the Ukraine team to the EuroBasket playoffs, where the team remained in 1/8. As a result of the finals last fall, Ukraine took 11th place in the tournament.
In the 2023 World Cup qualifiers, the Ukrainian team managed to advance to the second stage, but failed to fulfill its task and qualified for the World Cup, finishing in fifth place in its group.

Jokic may lose his chance to compete for NBA MVP award
Denver Nuggets announced Nikola Jokic He will miss at least four weeks due to left knee hyperextension.
The Serb is expected to miss all 18 matches in January and his maximum appearances this season could be limited to 64 matches. So Jokic will lose the opportunity to compete for the NBA’s main prizes – MVP and inclusion in the All-NBA, as this requires playing at least 65 games in the regular season.
Theoretically, he could return for the January 31 game against the Brooklyn Nets, which would give Nikola the opportunity to play 65 games before the end of the season, but that scenario is unlikely.
Jokic was injured in the last seconds of the first half of the match against Miami Heat (123:147) and did not return to the field after a long break. Before his injury, he managed to score 21 points, 8 assists and 5 rebounds in just 19 minutes.
Jokic averaged 29.9 points, 12.4 rebounds and 11.1 assists per game this season.
