Japan defeated Cape Verde and qualified for the Olympics with hot Tominaga and Hockinson
Japan became the fourth team to qualify for the Olympic Games after beating Cape Verde 80-71, securing their ticket to the Asian continent.
Japan is at the Olympics! The ‘Samurai’ had a tough time against Cape Verde after coming from a 20-point deficit in the 4th quarter and going 9 minutes without a shot, but eventually edged Eddie Tavares’ team 80-71 for MundoBasket with 17:32 and qualified for the Olympics season after performing better than any other team on the Asian continent.
The incredible Joshua Hawkinson was the winner with 29 points (including his team’s last 6), while Keisei Tominaga added 22 points on 6/8 3-pointers.
For Cape Verde, which came close to a mythical upset, Eddie Tavares had 11 points (but on 3/11 shots) and 14 rebounds and Shane Da Rosa had 11 points.
