Canada easily beat Slovenia in the semifinals of the game where Doncic and Brooks were suspended
Luka Doncic and Dillon Brooks were eliminated in Canada’s relatively easy (100-89) win over Slovenia to advance to the World Cup semi-finals.
The fourth quarterfinals of the 2023 World Cup was the game the world had been waiting for more than any other. Canada and Slovenia packed the Mall of Asia Arena in Manila on Wednesday evening (September 6), with the Canadians advancing to the semi-finals of the tournament with a 100-89 win over Serbia (the other pair USA-Germany).
Jordi Fernandez’s team played good basketball, with poise, drive and energy, they broke through in the third quarter and never looked back. Dillon Brooks was sent off for an unsportsmanlike foul in the first period and a technical foul in the fourth period, but Sy Gilgeous-Alexander, RJ Barrett and Nyquil Alexander-Walker were there for the final goal and ultimate duel with Team USA.
The Slovenians, on the other hand, had an excellent picture in the first half (50:50 at halftime), but it was clear that they would not be able to keep up this pace for 40 minutes. Luka Doncic scored 26 points but his image was heartbreaking as he badmouthed FIBA officials, his coach, referees throughout the game and even peaceful Australian fans. He too was sent off with two technical penalties.
It was an impressive start for both teams, with Slovenia relying on their leaders and Canada relying on theirs. Gilgeous-Alexander was very effective from middle distance, the score went up without much difference and in the 26-24 phase of the period we saw 4/8 and 5/8 three-pointers respectively, with the Slovenians still having 25% two-pointers. The picture did not change in the second quarter either, the two teams went hand in hand, Doncic even opened a dialogue with the official stand, the game had everything from unsportsmanlike to technical and of course a lot of spectacle at 50:50 from half.
The Canadians went to +7 early in the second half, with Brooks going 59-52 and talking to the stands before it was 77-61, further irritating the already angry Doncic, who was busy with umpires, coaches, factors and even quarreled with Australian fans. Nevertheless, the 80:71 in the third round left the game open and the audience was now clearly on the side of the Slovenians. In the 33rd minute Dillon Brooks was sent off with a technical penalty, a few phases later Doncic was sent off with a second technical penalty and the game ended in the worst possible way.
The Slovenians made an attempt, but a basket from SGA in the 37th minute made it 96:85, which could not be turned back. At the end of the day, the best team advanced and that was definitely Canada, regardless of Slovenia’s grievances with the board.
