Ainars Bagatskis left the Ukrainian national team after completing the 2023 World Cup qualifications; The Latvian specialist’s contract has expired. He was the head coach of the Ukrainian men’s team for three and a half years. During this time, he qualified for the 2021 European Championship by winning the selection group. Bagatskis also managed to lead the Ukrainian national team to the EuroBasket play-offs, and last autumn the team made it to the 1/8 final stage.
The Ukrainian team managed to advance to the second stage while qualifying for the 2023 World Cup, but could not complete the task given to it and finished fifth in its group, qualifying for the World Cup. Vitaly Stepanovsky became the new head coach of the Ukraine national basketball team, replacing Bagatskis.
