The dominant Mitoglou, Olympiakos’ zero points in the post and the invisible Hernangomet

Stefanos Makris analyzes Panathinaikos’ victory over Olympiakos in SEF with the help of Hudl Instat. The impressive Mitoglou on both ends of the floor, the walkup blocking in the pick and roll, the zero points in the Olympiakos post and the catalyst Hernangometh in the finals.

THE Panathinaikos bared his teeth in SEF against it Olympic And managed to achieve a great victory with 54-66 in the 4th game of the Stoiximan Basket League.

The “Greens” blocked the “Red-Whites” with their defense, They found their X factor in the person of Dinos Mitoglou and they achieved a well-deserved victory.

The Sportish analyzes the victory of the “Cloverleaf” with the help of Hudl Instat.

Mitoglou dominated on both ends of the floor

Dinos Mitoglou is the only Panathinaikos player who can compete in both big player positions, giving Ergin Ataman flexibility.

This was more than evident in the SEF Derby, where he scored 20 points and 10 rebounds in 32 minutes and 2 seconds of play, thus competing in both high positions. Of those, he spent 28 minutes and 23 seconds as power forward and 3 minutes and 39 seconds as center. Mitoglou did damage by playing both outside-in and inside-out.

Here’s how he scored against Olympiacos:

According to Hudl Instat, the international striker/center was the main defender in 12 attacks by the “Red and Whites” and only conceded 10 points, which corresponds to 0.83 points per passive possession. His four international appearances stand out in the statistics, but it is his behavior in defense with Panathinaikos substitutions in positions 1-4 that makes the difference. Speaking of defense.

Walkup’s lockdown against PnR and Olympiakos’ zero points against Post

It is known that the reference point at Olympiakos is the presence of Milutinov and Fal in the center position. The ability of the two big “red and white” players to reach the post – but also to shoot on goal – is an important part of their philosophy. Before From the derby it was emphasized that post defense will play an important role in the development of the game. This is how the “Greens” managed not to score a point in post-up situations!

According to Hudl Instat, Olympiacos only attempted to attack the post three times without scoring a point. To be precise, the “Red and Whites” took only one shot (by Milutinov) and made two errors (one by Fal and one by Papanikolaou, who passed to Peters when the American hit the post). But how did Panathinaikos prevent creation? Olympiakos’ post “It seems strange to me, but it was because of the way he defended the pick and roll on the walkup.”

The “Greens” decided on a flat/drop from the naturalized guard and gave him the shot. In this way they avoided changing umbrellas while their center was always close to the basket. At the same time, the “Greens” blocked the aisles by playing as a group with the other players. Somehow any chance of a pass hitting the post was thwarted. Here is an example:

Walkup engages in a pick and roll with Fal, leaving Lessor behind.

Olympiakos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangometh

Walkup has a chance to shoot, but he hesitates, waiting for Fall to roll in as the “green” defense closes.

Olympiacos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangomet

Walkup passes to Fal on the move.

The landlord steals the ball.

Olympiacos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangomet

Walkup hesitated. He has taken on a larger role for Olympiakos this year, but is still more of a creator than a doer and not an elite shooter off the dribble, which Panathinaikos had been banking on. Here’s another Olympiacos attack:

Walkup sets up pick and roll with Fal, keeping Lessor inside the three-point cube.

Olympiakos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangometh

Walkup shoots to the basket, Lessor is at the peak of the shots and Mitoglou concentrates on Fal’s shot, freeing Peters in the corner and closing the spaces.

Olympiacos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangomet

Walkup makes a terribly difficult shot with three opponents and misses.

Olympiacos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangomet

Walkup finally scored with an offensive rebound during this phase. This was also his only basket of the game as he finished the game with 2 points on 1/8 shooting, 3 assists and 7 fouls. The defense of the “Greens” tired the naturalized guard. At the same time, the “clover” closed the venues and left Olympiacos no room to “feed” their big players.

The only way out for Olympiacos was Nigel Williams-Goss, who kept his team in the game. Then Ergin Ataman played another card.

Juancho about Williams-Goss and the high number of +13

For almost 35 minutes, Olympiacos were in the game thanks to their defense and the inspiration of Williams-Goss in attack. The “Greens” had decided to defend with ICE (that is, they cut off the central corridor) in the pick and roll, which involved all Olympiakos guards except Walkap. This made it difficult for Olympiakos (as they are a defense that also blocks the pass at the post), with Williams-Goss being the only player who had an answer to this.

The American did the so-called dribbling several times when receiving a screen. This means that after receiving the screen, he paused his dribble and waited with the defender on his hip before heading to the basket. This often resulted in Olympiakos giving him a second guard on the way to the basket, creating space, which is something the Reds generally do this year with both Williams-Goss and walkup. Check out an example:

My goodness Milutinov wants to pick and roll, but Slukas plays ICE and doesn’t let him in the middle.

Olympiakos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangometh

Williams-Goss counters to the screen, Sluka on his hip, waiting for Milutinov.

Olympiacos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangomet

Milutinov gives Williams-Goss a second screen and keeps Balcerovski in check.

Williams-Goss scores

Olympiacos – Panathinaikos: The dominant Mitoglou, the zero points of the “Red-Whites” in the post and the invisible Hernangomet

Williams-Goss offered solutions to Olympiacos in one way or another. He was the only Red and White player to score in a pick-and-roll situation (7 points in 5 possessions, while all of his teammates had 0 points in 4 possessions). Seeing this, Ergin Ataman decided to change his strategy. He was already playing on the floor with the trio Hernangomet, Mitoglou, Lessor, throwing the 2.06 m tall Spaniard over the 1.91 m tall Williams-Goss and now decided to move to all screens.

This final decision by the Turkish coach ruled out the game for Panathinaikos in defense. With Hernangometh following him everywhere, Williams-Goss struggled. As if that wasn’t enough, Mitoglou or Lessor pounced on him in transition when he got a screen. Since at the same time the space was limited because Panathinaikos closed the racket, Olympiakos also lost its last attack. The game was over.

According to Hudl Instat, the “Greens” had +13 when Hernangomet, Mitoglou and Lessor were on the floor under the basket. Panathinaikos’ great form suffocated Olympiakos after closing spaces and restricting its movement and had the problem of being made huge by the ‘Red-Whites” 6/23 threes.

A real derby

Panathinaikos was the worthy winner. The “Greens” pinned Olympiakos with their defense, they cut off his creation in the pick and roll, causing walkup to shoot, while in general they let the “Red-Whites” take the shot, not letting the ball pass them and Fal, Milutinov, which wiped out Olympiacos’ big advantage.

Panathinaikos now sees a big confidence boost after this win. At the same time, it shows that his players are gradually slipping into roles and gaining a foothold. Mitoglou’s leadership – who is probably Panathinaikos’ most important player this year – Hernangometh’s flashes (even in defense, which he is not famous for) Guy’s shots, these are things he can keep, even though he knows it is with Sloukas At some point things will look up and there is a lot to expect from many.

On the other hand, Olympiacos Piraeus showed that it does not have a clear head. The 4/16 shots and 12 turnovers with 12 assists show this, as does the fact that he only made two post attacks for practically the entire game (one each against Milutinov and Fal), which is theoretically his strength. Brazdeikis also showed that he still cannot be with his teammates, McKissick will be sorely missed. The image of Williams-Goss (who is constantly improving) is a sign of optimism, but the Red and Whites need to find ways to be more productive in attack.

At the end of the day, Panathinaikos got a great win – and a confidence boost – and Olympiacos stood in the mirror after the game and stared at their (attacking) problems. There will be more derbies. Both opponents have a lot of room for improvement. This time, however, the ball landed on the green.

Basketball player Elatontsev, who left Lokomotiv-Kuban, signed a contract with the NCAA team

The Oklahoma Sooners University of Oklahoma team, which plays in the North American student league NCAA, announced on its official website that it has signed a contract with Russian basketball player Kirill Elatontsev, who has a valid agreement with the Krasnodar club Lokomotiv-Kuban.

In November, Lokomotiv-Kuban announced that Elatontsev was likely faking signs of illness in order to avoid taking part in matches. Then the center voluntarily left the club and flew to the USA. In December, Match TV reported that Lokomotiv applied to the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in order to prohibit Elatontsev from moving within competitions under the auspices of the organization.

“First of all, we are glad that Kirill is here, because the path to this moment has been long. He’s older and has played against some really tough opponents, which will also help us in league games. In addition, he has an excellent shot from under the hoop. “We’re excited about his arrival and we’re working to get him acclimated to our program, our system, so he can help us as quickly as possible,” Oklahoma head coach Porter Moser said.

The release notes that Elatontsev can play for the team.

Elatontsev is 23 years old and made his debut for the main team of Lokomotiv-Kuban in 2021. The center was recognized as the best young player in the VTB United League for two seasons in a row.

NBA: Barnes’ powerful triple-double, Detroit defeat and Lakers victory

Six games were played in the NBA regular season on the night of December 28-29.

Toronto hosted Golden State and earned a hard-fought overtime victory.

The Raptors had a better first quarter, during which they broke away from their opponent by 10 points (33:23), but the Warriors leveled this difference quite quickly and by the end of the second quarter they were already +6 – 56:50. However, they were unable to maintain their advantage, at least until the big break when the home team took the lead at 65:64.

In the third quarter, Golden State took the initiative and took the lead by 12 points (95:83), but at the end of the quarter, Toronto made an 8:0 move, reducing the gap to 4 points (96:100). However, the guest team started the fourth quarter better and stayed two or three shots away from their opponents. This continued until the middle of the quarter, and then Toronto slowly began to close the gap, tying the score at 120:120 47 seconds before the siren, thanks to Quickley’s three-pointer. Podzemski then hit a two-pointer to put the Warriors back in front, but Barnes responded with a two-pointer with 24 seconds left in the quarter, sending the game into overtime. The home team started the match with a score of 10:0 and then calmly maintained its advantage with a score of 141:127 and scored 5 points in 5 minutes.

Barnes recorded a triple-double with 23 points, 25 rebounds and 10 assists for Toronto. The most productive player of the match was Curry, but the 39 points he scored did not help the guest team win.

The Clippers hosted Detroit and won a sensational victory.

The home team was ahead by 19 points (33:14) in the first quarter, and then remained ahead throughout the entire match, reaching its maximum advantage of 26 points (95:69) at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Before the end of the game, the opponent regained half of this handicap, but this did not help the Pistons fully return to the game. As a result, the Clippers earned a landslide victory with a score of 112:99.

The most productive player of the match was Leonard, who achieved a double-double by scoring 55 points and collecting 11 rebounds, which was almost half of the Clippers’ entire set.

The Lakers defeated Sacramento after a series of underachievement.

Özernye, who took the initiative from the beginning of the game, gradually increased his advantage, won all quarters of the match and was defeated with a score of 125:101.

For the Lakers, Doncic scored 34 points and Ayton had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Let’s bow our heads. Legendary basketball player killed by rocket in Lviv

Every day at 9 am, Ukrainians commemorate the people who lost their lives in the Russia-Ukraine war. Today Sport.ua pays tribute to the outstanding Ukrainian basketball player of two EuroBaskets participants, Viktor Kobzisty, who was killed exactly two years ago, on December 29, 2023, supposedly by a Russian missile deep in the lines in Lviv. The man will remain 44 years old forever.

The legend of “Budivelnik”

Viktor Kobzisty was born on March 7, 1979 in Kremenchug, Poltava region. As a child, Victor played hockey and football. I quit football before because I was too high for this game. Later, Kobzisty quit hockey and focused on basketball. Victor, who studied at Kremenchug children’s and youth school No. 2, was considered one of the most talented players of his age in Ukraine.

After graduating from nine secondary school classes, Kobzisty entered the Kremenchug Pedagogical School named after Makarenko and in 1995, at the age of 16, he became a player of Kremenchug Neftekhim, where he made his debut in professional competitions. In 1996, Victor moved to Russian Samara, where he played only in the second team. Due to the fact that the club management rejected the offer to accept Russian citizenship.

In 1999, Kobzisty returned to Ukraine and signed a contract with CSKA Kiev, with which he became the silver medalist of the championship and the winner of the national cup in his first season. The army team finished the next championship in third place, after which Kobzisty moved to the ranks of Mariupol Azovmash.

In 2001, Victor tried playing abroad again – he went to Bulgaria, where he spent a season as a member of Yambolgazy. In the same year, Kobzisty played in the EuroBasket final as part of the Ukrainian national team.

Victor returned to Ukraine in 2002 and immediately became the leader of the Kyiv Budivelnik in the broadest sense. The legendary club was going through difficult times at that time, but the young people gathered in the team led by Kobzisty showed incredible thirst and attracted the attention of the fans with their fighting character. Victor spent four brilliant seasons with the Kyiv team.

Victor Kobzisty (No. 6)

And although “Budivelnik” was not among the leaders at that time, Kobzisty regularly received calls from the Ukrainian national teams. In particular, he played with the national team in the second EuroBasket of his career in 2005 and with the student team in two World Universiades. In 2005, Ukrainians won the silver medal, for which Kobzisty received the title of international master of sports. In 2006, Victor moved to Dnepr, but in 2008 he returned to Budivelnik and with him became the champion of Ukraine for the first time in 2011, after which he ended his playing career.

Coaching activities

Completing his performances, Kobzisty became assistant head coach of Budivelnik in 2011 and worked as an assistant to Josep Berrocal, Zvezdan Mitrovic and Ainars Bagatskis until 2014. Later, Victor took over as head of Dnepr-Azot from Kamensky, with whom he worked for a year.

In 2015, Kobzisty became president of Kremen from his hometown Kremenchug, and in 2017-2018 he played several matches for the club’s second team in the first division. He held this position until 2020 and also served as president of the club’s children and youth sports school.

In 2021, Victor was invited to work at the Lviv City Basketball Federation, and from 2023 he worked as the head coach of the women’s club Dynamo from Kiev, which plays in the Ukrainian Super League.

Death

Viktor Kobzisty also came to Lviv at the end of 2023 on basketball-related matters. He rented an apartment on Gnat Khotkevich Street in the Sykhov residential area. And it was this house that was hit by a Russian missile on December 29. One person died then. Victor Kobzisty.

Victor was buried in his hometown of Kremenchug on January 2, 2024. The funeral took place in St. Nicholas Cathedral, and the basketball player found eternal peace at the Svishtovsky cemetery.

Family

Victor and his wife raised two children. One of the sons, Alexander, now 22, followed in his father’s footsteps and is now also a basketball player. He played on Ukraine’s youth and junior national teams, made his national team debut, and currently plays for the University of Oregon team in the NCAA.
