The capacity groups of the pre-Olympic tournaments and the possible opponents of the Greek national team
FIBA announced the six capacity groups before the draw for the pre-Olympic tournaments on Thursday evening (November 23rd).
A few days before the draw for the four pre-Olympic tournaments (November 27, 8:00 p.m.), all expected to take place in Greece (and probably SEF), Spain, Puerto Rico and Latvia, FIBA announced the capacity groups of the 24 teams fighting for the final four tickets to the Olympic Games.
Special:
- 1st group: Spain, Latvia, Lithuania, Slovenia
- 2nd group: Brazil, Italy, Greece, Poland
- 3rd group: Puerto Rico, Montenegro, Dominican Republic, Finland
- 4th group: New Zealand, Georgia, Mexico, Lebanon
- 5th group: Croatia, Ivory Coast, Angola, Philippines
- 6th group: Egypt, Bahamas, Cameroon, Bahrain
If Spain, Latvia and Greece actually organize pre-Olympic tournaments, they will not be able to compete against each other. This means that the national team will play against either Lithuania or Slovenia from the first group.
Furthermore, as FIBA notes, it is not possible to have more than two European teams in each group (each pre-Olympic game will have two groups of three teams each) and no more than three European teams in each tournament.
A maximum of 1 team from America takes part in each tournament.
A maximum of one team from Asia and Oceania takes part in each tournament.
A maximum of 1 team from Africa takes part in each tournament.
