A day of celebration for basketball, as it became known that the UN declared December 21st as “World Basketball Day” because it was the day on which Dr. James Naismith discovered the sport in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891
Basketball now has its own day. Basketball celebrates. It has been revealed that the United Nations General Assembly voted to declare December 21 as World Basketball Day, with basketball becoming the first sport to have its own official day during the year.
December 21st is certainly not a random date. The reason for this is that this was the day that the In 1891 Dr. James Naismith the sport in Springfield, Massachusetts.
FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zaglis said: “We are very proud of the launch of World Basketball Day and very grateful to the United Nations and other partner organizations who continue to recognize the positive role that basketball plays for millions of different people around the world.
The fact that basketball is the first team sport to receive such recognition is clear evidence and confirmation of the enormous social benefits it offers and the limitless opportunities that arise from leveraging Basketball For Good.
To celebrate the established World Basketball Day, FIBA will organize a series of activities, including a special event at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball for UN officials and partner organizations in Geneva, as well as guests from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations (ASOIF) and representatives of the YMCA.
The FIBA Foundation is also using the first World Basketball Day to launch its annual photo competition. This year’s theme is “Basketball for Good.” Further details about the competition can be found here.
