81-89: Valencia also wins against Gran Canaria
Valencia Baskett arrived in Malaga having won just seven of their last 18 games and with questions from Brandon Davis and Xavi López Arostegui. As if that wasn’t enough, Dreamland’s Gran Canaria overwhelmed them in 90% of their quarter-final matches. But if there’s one thing about Talonja’s team, it’s that they never give up, as seen in the many comebacks they’ve made this season, most recently against Barça in Palau. History repeated itself yesterday, as Mumburu’s team came from behind to win 81-89 in overtime, but the game went from being behind to being ahead, with their rivals almost always having the upper hand.
Because just when it looked like he had done all the work (69-77 with 70 seconds left), he forgot to finish it and Nico Brussino’s incredible triple forced overtime for the Granca. . Valencia’s fans, who were already celebrating the victory, froze when the throw-in was converted into a three-pointer by the Argentine with 1.2 seconds remaining. I was standing alone in the corner, incomprehensibly. Partially 0-8, the game went into overtime (77-77).
That emotional blow could crush anyone, but Valencia is harder than a rock. Two of his players who were very bad until the final quarter, Chris Jones and Semi Ojeleye (who reached a rating of -8), made his two triples to start overtime (77-87). At times he led great takeoffs. Last.
The first 35 minutes of the match were difficult to predict, with Gran Canaria always having the upper hand. In a game where there were more mistakes than successes, the rise of Sylvain Landsberg (25 goals) and the determination of Albisi ensured that Rakovic’s side were always in the lead, albeit without much difference. The biggest hit was eight points in the 29 minutes (52-44) after Perros’ triple, but they were held to seven points (57-50) at the start of the final quarter.
However, while Valencia showed improvement over time, the match felt long for ‘Grança’. The performance of Jovic, who scored nine goals almost in a row, balanced the game (62-61, 34 minutes), and the awakening of Jones and Ojeleye tilted the balance for Talogna. With less than a minute and a half remaining, the score looked decided at 69-77, but a magical minute gave Gran Canaria extra life.
He didn’t take advantage of it. In fact, Valencia didn’t let him take advantage of it.
