“That’s out of the question.” Kushchenko on the return of Khimki to the VTB United League

President of the VTB United League Sergei Kushchenko ruled out the return of Khimki near Moscow to the number of participating teams in the near future.

In July 2021, Khimki was unable to confirm participation in the United League season due to lack of financial guarantees. Since then, the Moscow region club has been playing in the Super League.

— Are you considering returning to the high society of Khimki near Moscow?

– This is impossible. The club caused too much reputational damage to both the United League and the Euroleague when it quickly left these tournaments due to problems with financing. Now we are forced to look two steps ahead. For example, the sponsor of one club’s business is booming, while another may face risks. We need to anticipate this. Now we are very seriously considering the prospects of Minsk: will they play next season or not. Despite the fact that we love Minsk very much, all teams love to come to the capital of Belarus. But the team lacks quality management,” Rossiyskaya Gazeta quotes Kushchenko.

Khimki is the winner of the VTB United League (2010/11), as well as a two-time winner of the European Cup (2011/12, 2014/15).
