Top 10 names for the 2024 NBA Draft
Unsurprisingly, the most international draft was this year’s, with two French players taking the top spots, but two other international players also making it into the top ten.
While many are talking about one of the worst periods in recent memory, the Class of 2024 has a very intriguing lineup of players, with the top 10 including the best players reviewed below.
Ten
Cody Williams
Utah Jazz
The Thunder’s younger brother, Jalen Williams, finished 10th. The Jazz got a forward who, despite season-ending injury issues in college, was able to prove his qualities with a good wrist (41.5% triple conversion rate) and 74.1% paint accuracy. It’s the best evidence yet that he knows how to use his 2.03″ height, not a center.
9
Zach Eadie
Memphis Grizzlies
His 2.24 average is on Wenbanyamah’s level, and his wingspan is on Rudy Gobert’s level, so this draft has one of the highest ceilings in the NBA right now. Recognizing that being tall and dominating in the zone is no longer the norm in the NBA, the Canadian international added the three-point shot to his repertoire, finishing his senior year at Purdue with 25, 2 rebounds, 12.2 points on 50% accuracy, 2 assists and 2 rebounds averages. Ja Morant has a new partner, and the combination promises to impress.
8
Rob Dillingham
Minnesota Timberwolves
He was originally drafted by the San Antonio Spurs, but the Timberwolves, seeking an outside teammate for Anthony Edwards, acquired him in exchange for the 2030 and 2031 rounds. After just one season with Kentucky, he would enter the NBA as one of the shortest players in the league (1.91 cm) and, above all, lightest (80 kg), two problems that had to be solved based on his speed and electric play.
7
Donovan Clingan
Portland Trail Blazers
Though he was a top-five pick, the University of Connecticut insider ultimately slipped to No. 7. The Blazers’ pre-draft move to acquire Deni Avdija gives them an impressive interior (6-foot-11, 230 pounds)… who may have problems in the NBA, where everyone can dribble, run and throw.
6
Tijan Salaun
Charlotte Hornets
The Hornets decided to bet on one of the big unknowns of the draft. The Frenchman has the physique to shine in the NBA, but at the same time he still has a long way to go before he can shine in the best league in the world. His numbers of 9.6 points, 4 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 54 games with Cholet are out of this world, so he will have to improve his game a lot before he can be considered.
Five
Ron Holland
Detroit Pistons
Probably the most athletic player in this draft. It’s not because of his conditioning (his 7.7 lbs and 200 lbs are out of this world), but because of his style of play. He’s active and intense throughout the game, which helps him both offensively and defensively. After a good year with the G-League Ignite, averaging 19.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists, he ended up with the Pistons. We saw how the Pistons only got the 5th pick despite their great efforts… but they got a player that looked very good.
Four
Stephen Castle
San Antonio Spurs
Wenby’s new partner. The tall shooting guard (1.98 ERA) like the Frenchman bases his game on good reads on both offense and defense, as well as good athleticism. He needs to improve his wrist (he made 26.7% of his triples in his only year at Connecticut), but he has everything Popovich needs (basketball intelligence and physical condition) to get back on the diamond.
3
Reed Shepherd
Houston Rockets
The bronze medal is awarded to the player who meets expectations and has everything it takes to succeed from the get-go. He is arguably the best shooter of his generation, averaging 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists on an incredible 52.1% three-point shooting percentage at Kentucky. But he is also a great athlete, with a best vertical jump of 42 inches (106 cm). The big question? His 1.91 kg and 91 kg may not be enough in this NBA.
2
Alex Searle
Washington Wizards
Tall, fast, agile… the Frenchman had everything to shine and finally fell into a team that allowed him to exploit his whole game and develop without disconnect. His ability to defend all positions, from point guard to center, is one of his many qualities in defence, while in attack he is not afraid to dribble and shoot from the three, two almost essential traits nowadays.
1
Zachary Resacher
Atlanta Hawks
The most “Spanish” Frenchman was the first pick in the draft. Being the most “selected” player in the draft has its rewards, and a great year with JL Bourse Basket was all the Hawks needed to acquire him. Shining in Australia, the G League and the NCAA is not the same as shining in the second best continental competition in Europe. Stephane’s son averaged 10.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1 assist last season, shooting 46% from the field and 38.7% from three-point range. Being the leader of a team about to enter the Euroleague at 19 years old is not within everyone’s reach, so now we just have to wait and see if it lives up to expectations.
