Before the Olympic basketball tournament match, the organizers mixed up the anthem of South Sudan, Sky Sport Italia reports.
The anthem of Sudan, the country from which South Sudan separated in 2011 following a referendum, began to play in the arena.
The Puerto Rican basketball team expressed solidarity with the South Sudanese team by applauding along with the spectators. The match organizers apologized for the mistake.
The Group C match, which took place on Sunday, ended with a score of 90:79 (20:28, 28:26, 23:15, 17:10) in favor of the South Sudanese. The match was the debut for the South Sudanese national basketball team at the Olympic Games.
In the next round, the South Sudan team will play the current Olympic champion, the USA team, on July 31.
