The San Antonio Spurs press service published a written statement from head coach Greg Popovich, who is recovering from a mini-stroke.
75-year-old Popovich suffered a mini-stroke on November 2 before the NBA regular season match with Minnesota (113:103). Since then, Popovich has been replaced by assistant Mitch Johnson. San Antonio did not say how long the head coach’s recovery would last.
“These six weeks were a big surprise for my family and for me. The talented professionals supervising the process of my treatment wish me with all their might a speedy return to the basketball bench. Because in the medical sense, I am absolutely not trainable,” the Spurs press service quotes Popovich’s humorous words on social networks.
Popovich is the leader among coaches in the number of victories in the NBA regular season (1,390). Since 1996, he has headed San Antonio, with whom he won the championship title five times.
