Former Avtodor basketball player arrested in the USA for domestic violence
American basketball player Syndarius Thornwell, who spent the 2023/24 season as part of the Saratov Avtodor, was arrested in the United States, WISTV 10 reports.
He was charged with second-degree domestic violence and child abuse. The Richland County Sheriff’s Department said a 30-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday.
The charges stem from an incident that occurred Aug. 12 on Glenn Village Road. The victim reportedly told officers that Thornwell attacked her while she was holding her baby after an argument. She also stated that Thornwell threw a glass of water at her and hit her in the back of the head.
Thornwell denied hitting the victim but admitted throwing a glass of water at him, sheriff’s deputies said.
The player spent four seasons in the NBA, playing for the Los Angeles Clippers, New Orleans Pelicans and Orlando Magic. Since 2021, he has played in Germany, Turkey, Poland and Russia, and most recently has been performing in China.
