Miami basketball player Rozier and Portland coach Billups will not be paid until the FBI investigation is completed
NBA Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier and Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups will not receive pay during their forced suspensions, ESPN reports.
Last week, the NBA suspended Rozier and Billups, who were arrested in connection with illegal betting and gambling. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is investigating Rozier and Billups as part of a global investigation into possible corruption in American basketball.
Rozier’s salary, which is about $26.6 million this season and is being paid in installments, will be held in escrow, the source said. If Rozier is cleared of the charges, and if he can then return to play in the NBA, he will receive all of the withheld payments. While Billups, who makes $7 million a year, risks losing all the money withheld during his suspension.
Billups was arrested as part of an investigation into illegal betting. The coach is suspected of illegal gaming activities associated with the mafia. Rozier came to public attention after an unexpected surge in betting ahead of the Charlotte Hornets-New Orleans Pelicans game in March 2023.
