Here’s how the Euroleague standings look after Real Madrid’s new setback
A week ago, Real Madrid looked set to advance in the EuroLeague when they comfortably defeated Barça in the Palau Blaugrana. But the Whites’ progress was halted in a double-header week that saw Sergio Scariolo’s side lose just two games, as the laughter traveled from neighborhood to neighborhood.
In addition to last Tuesday’s game in Valencia, today’s match was added against Panathinaikos at the Movistar Arena, where Panathinaikos dominated Real Madrid from beginning to end, winning 77-87 in the end. The white team is still negatively balanced in the standings (5-6) and out of playoff and play-in position.
Valencia Baskett’s performance wasn’t much better and they were within striking distance of victory, but in the culmination of an unforgettable match, they lost the final set 11-0, losing 90-86 on a basketball court in Paris.
The other Spanish team in contention, Baskonia, also lost 89-83 in exile to visiting Maccabi Tel Aviv in Belgrade. Coach Galbiati’s team has always been on the back foot, but although they managed to pull within two points in the final quarter, they were unable to find a goal in the final stretch.
Without the game, Barça (6 wins, 4 losses) would move up to sixth place. To keep that going, they must win against Virtus Bologna this Friday.
